Finally got the headers on and the exhaust finished. Old Rueben really sounds nice. Hooker ceramics tied to a flowmaster exhaust with a single 3" outlet. It seems to be working great. I was hoping to have the interior done by now but the funds are slow to come in and I do what I can. So far I have done the exhaust, replaced the throwout bearing, and the biggest ouch was the tires. I don't want to take any short cuts on Rueben so I wait till I can do each job right.
I changed the exhaust from coming out just behind the rear wheel to coming out just in front of the rear bumper. I see so many 4X4's with the exhaust coming out at the rear wheel and if the truck gets used at all off road, it is going to get dented. Even as tall as Rueben is, I have managed to find rocks that are taller. I have done the same thing on my Tacoma as well. No more dented quarter panels! That is once I get the dent straightened.
Here is a shot of the engine with the 390 in all of it's glory. I painted the inner fender wells before I put the engine in. I wish that I had done the firewall as well.
Before I do the outside body work and paint, I want to do a spray in bed liner and re-skin the shell. I have grown to really like the shell and will be keeping it. I will build a simple interior for the bed that will allow me to camp with some comforts.
Rueben is not a daily runner and just waits for me to get back to work on him. I thought I was tired of working on vehicles but I am enjoying all that I am doing and my son is helping and it is good times together.
Until my next upgrade.
Mikey

Re: New headers on my 71
I won't be much help on getting a set of headers. I was lucky enough to find my set on E Bay. They were brand new but it has been a while since I bought them and I don't remember how much I paid, but it was about half of what they were new. I like the Hookers since they are one piece and do not split around the motor mount. They also have a very heavy duty flange plate. Some of the headers I looked at were tin can thin and had a very weak flange that I would not trust not to warp.
Shorty headers would be nice but I was not able to find any to fit the FE and our year of truck. There are some out there to fit a 460 conversion and I kind of wish that I had done that when I did my motor, but oh well, I have what I have.

Re: New headers on my 71
I used Hooker Headers as well. Here's alink to a whole line up of them:

They are well made and fit decently. It still takes some work to get them in there, but it's worth it.
