Is this a hard fix???(8.1.11 now what??)
I placed the truck's rear end upside down on some saw horses so that I could primer and then I plan to paint. It has been on saw horses for five nights. Tonight I went out and noticed some fluid on the floor. Looks like some leaked from the "yolk" section. Please see picture below:
Should this be a big concern? Is this difficult to fix? I have turned the axle right side up now.
Thanks

Re: Is this a hard fix???
it needs a new seal. remove the yoke then remove the seal and replace it with a good seal. look at the yoke where it ran on the seal and make sure it doesnt have a groove cut into it from the seal wearing into it.

To see your still pluggin away...like craig said...pop the pinion nut and ya should be able to tap the yoke out...replace and retork the nut

Re: Is this a hard fix???
Isn't there a crush washer that should be replaced as well when doing that?

A friend of mine told me to use the same crush washer after replacing the seal.mrsnicks wrote:Isn't there a crush washer that should be replaced as well when doing that?

I may send the "rear end" out and have everything redone just to be sure. Since I have it off the truck completely. I may go ahead and have the shop put on the brakes as well.

Re: Is this a hard fix???(8.1.11 now what??)
I removed the old seal. Bought a new one and have allowed the seal to soak.
I know I can borrow a tool from O'reileys'. However, does anyone have another way of putting in the new seal? I want to make sure I do not bind the seal. I wan't sure if the tool from O'reileys would work with the pinion sticking out.
Thanks

Re: Is this a hard fix???
Actually, I didn't see any crush washer when I removed the old seal. Unless I over looked something. I'm not doing anything with the bearings.JWW wrote:mrsnicks wrote:Isn't there a crush washer that should be replaced as well when doing that?

Now I am trying to figure an easy way to put the seal back in.
Thanks

you can use a hammer to tap in seals. just do it evenly all around the seal.

Re: Is this a hard fix???
You will not see the crush sleeve as it is between the pinion brngs. It's job is to keep/ adjust the preload on the bearings...The seal should be DRY unless it is leather..Just put a little petroleum jelly in the area where the garter spring is to keep it from popping out and tap it in.Keep the outside of the seal dry.JWW wrote:Actually, I didn't see any crush washer when I removed the old seal. Make sure that the area where the seal contacts the housing is dry.No grease here.
Tightening the nut is an acquired feel just pull it tight with a 1/2 inch ratchet while holding the yoke with a pipe wrench.too tight & you will crush the sleeve more, but it will take a lot of torque for that to happen. hard to explain..donnie

I think to do it right you need a new crush sleeve and need to re-torque it. I think the torque value is around 275lbs but am probably off on that. I know it is hard to torque. You might be able to get lucky by using the method above. I hope you do
