Dana 60 dif bearing face ware and repair

Post by eggman918 »

I have finely got to the point of re gearing the dif's in the filthy beast and the carrier's are wore to the point that they were not serviceable :(
So I built tooling to line bore the face's ,the started out with .003 to .008 ware 3 at the bottom and 8 at the top the the cones had spun, after facing they are parallel within .0003"
but it was necessary to remove aprox. .010 from each face.Do you think that is close enough to run or do I need to find a new housing?
here are some pics

Nice work! Doubtful Dana ever built anything parallel within 3 tenths. I'm sure it will work fine as long as the races are tight when the caps are locked down.

Thank's for the complement,it turned out better than I had even hoped. The setup I thought had to work but you never know till the tool meets the metal.
started with the rear as they are easier to come by ,I plan to make new shaft to set pinion depth then re machine to fit the 44.that is the one i am sweating they are hard to find.
Do you think I will need more shims than come in the kit to make up the .020 I removed to clean up the faces?

A standard shim set will cover .020 extra and then some. I'd try setting up the gears without a depth tool first. If you kept track of it, put in the same shim you took out with the new gears for starters. Pinion depth always seams pretty straightforward to me.
