3 speed column help
So my 70 was having an issue when I would try to shift it back into 1st or rev but itwould go in. So I put a new shift collar and it only made the problem worse. Not the shift tube wont drop into the first and second arm when I pull back on the shifter.

Re: 3 speed column help
possibly worn shift arm bushings. the rods need adjusted. the cab mounts are sagging. it could be in the lower column too. you just have to look and see where it is worn at.

Re: 3 speed column help
As Fordman says, first check your cab mounts to make sure it is not putting pressure on the steering column. Next, look at the shift arms at the bottom of the column. In neutral, they should be lined up. I suspect you have worn bushings or perhaps a worn shift tab at the shift arms that won't allow it to engage / disengage.
There is a great tutorial on rebuilding the column on this site. You may have to pull the entire column and go through it piece by piece. It is not hard to do and if you order the replacement bushings in advance, you could easily do this in a day.
The net result is a truck that will shift perfectly like it did when it was new!

Re: 3 speed column help
I replaced the shift arm bushings a couple months ago. It could be the mounts or the linkages. The shift arms are lining up in neutral. I bet it is in my shift tube because the one I put in after the other broke was out of my 67 SWB.

Re: 3 speed column help
I gotta figure out this column. In order for it to go into first and reverse I have to push on the shift tube to engage the 1st and rev. arms. The problem only got worse when I put on this new shift collar. Upon closer inspection I noticed that the shift levers tab that sticks into the shift tube is all the way into the tube and it is preventing my shift tube from pushing down the column. What could be the cause? Should I just go ahead and put my old shift collar on and deal with it or what should I do?

Re: 3 speed column help
sounds like the shift tube is poping up and not being held in very well with the shift collar and the tss collar bolts. how do the botl holes in the outer tube look? if they are worn or the tss collar is losse . it will let the shift tube come up and not work properly. or the washers between the shift arms is worn out. that could set them down the column more.

Re: 3 speed column help
The shift collar is a brand new LMC truck part. But it looks almost exact to the original.91Bear wrote:Is the shift collar new or used? Where did you get it?
So fordman, If my collar bolts are loose than it could cause my problem right?

Re: 3 speed column help
It isnt my TSSbolts but I think I found a portion of the problem. The pic is hard to see but the shift collar has some ramping where the shift tube tab is supposed to stop. When I put on the new collar it made the shift tube able to slide up in the column but took away the leverage I had to fight it into first because the collar wwas bent enough for me to get it to shift. I ordered my new shift tube and I am positive it will fix my issue.
