ford 3 speed
Have beem given a ford 3 speed toploader with the side tag reading rat-g2 on side. Would this be ok behind a 390? Also what is this transmission called when ordering seals and gaskets? Nobody seems to understand just a ford truck 3 speed. is there another name for it?

It should hold up with the correct input shaft. It's the Ford 3.03

Re: ford 3 speed
Had one bolted up to my 302. Been a great transmission. No drain plug on bottom, only on the side.

My toploader is the same way. You van pull the bolt at the bottom of the tail shaft housing and it will drain. They are a tough trans. From what I understand they are as tough as a toploader. They maybe the same just missing 4th. It was put into some of the 2wd fe trucks from the factory.

it is same trans as 4 speed. just curious as to why they had different tag numbers for the different motors. either way i think i should be good.

Re: ford 3 speed
I think they had different input and output shafts depending on the motor. Not sure about that. They also had a close and wide ratio in the 4 speed. Don't know if the 3 speed was the same or not.blumule wrote:it is same trans as 4 speed. just curious as to why they had different tag numbers for the different motors. either way i think i should be good.

Re: ford 3 speed
Ford put the 303 behind 360's & 390's from the factory. You would really have to work at it to tear up a 3 speed. & I swear a member here or over at .net put one behind a 460 using a bell housing from a NP435, but I cant find the post.
Believe it or not, they're hard to find in my area. I have 2 spairs, just in case!
