Make it harder to shift?

Well 3 times now I have either been revving my engine for whatever reason or i'll be idling in park and my column shifter slips into reverse due to vibrations. It's a pretty scary experience when you don't expect it. Luckily there has been nothing behind me at least within a few feet. I was wondering if there was any way to adjust how hard or easy it is to shift from gears? It's a 1969 F-100 with a c-6 auto trans

Sounds like you need a new shift collar. The part that the shifter goes into. There is a part that wears out that allows the shifter do drop into reverse. They can be bought from most of the aftermarket dealers or get a better used one from a pull a part. May as well pull the column out as I think you will need to anyway. Go ahead and grease up the bearings and check out the shift tube real good. The part that moves the collar tends to wear out as well.

you can try a new shifter detent in the column. but ford only factory fix was to put a sticker onthe dahs to warn about this problem.

Now that your detent is worn out, your shifter will be more apt to "dropping" into reverse. A new detent or a new shift collar is in order.

you have to take the column apart and remove the detent thing from the back of the tss collar.

With a new collar, a new detent and the linkage properly adjusted, you should not have this problem any more. You may want to check cab mounts and motor mounts, also.

Follow this link for a good tutorial on how to pull the column apart. No one makes a replacement that is exactly like the original, so finding a good one from a junkyard is your best bet. If you can't find one LMC sells a replacement collar that's designed for 73-79 Ford trucks that also fits our columns. It won't look exactly the same but it will function properly. You can also find the same product at O'reilly's and possibly Autozone or Advanced auto parts. If you get one of these you will need to keep the internals from your old collar. DON'T lose the two screws that hold the plunger like device in there. I had to go to a specialty screw store to find them. They are self tapping screws. You should first thread the screws into the holes before you install the guts of the plunger, then clean out the shavings that were cut out. This will make it easier to finish the install later. Then just swap the plunger and springs from the old one to the new one and screw it down. Don't overtighten or you will strip the threads out and have to buy another one. If your old springs are weak the new collar comes with a new spring (the larger one). I didn't need to use it so I left it out.

Well my fear was realized. My truck ran away from me in reverse Luckily I caught it before my opened passenger door was damaged by the basketball goal or more likely the goal was damaged by the door.
