can I flush rear axle ?????

Post by stephen44 »

so i dismantled my rear axle - because it leaked like mad from the pumpkin seal - axle seals look ok.

So now it is in 3 parts - the pumpkin - the yoke - and the main housing.

What can i flush out without damaging seals etc - all of it ? - some of it ? - it is filthy and gritty

What do i flush it with - gasoline ?? - ?

also what is the correct RTV or sealer to reseal the pumkin gasket - I've heard the paper gasket won't work - and it had some stuff on already.

Do I put it on the yoke seal too.

Sorry for all the questions
thanks

since you took the yoke off go ahead and replace the seal there. i would wipe out all i could with rags. then use gas to wsh the inside the best i could. i wouldnt try to get any gas up into the axle tubes unless you can wipe it out or let it dry before puttign it all back together.

as far as sealers. i think regular silicone works. but the sealing surface must be completely dry and free of grease and oil residue. brake fluid cleaner will do that for you.

the yoke is on the outside of that. i probably wouldnt have taken that apart. i dont see a need unless it is just to clean it up better.

Have i caused a problem taking it apart ? - it was leaking here as it had only two bolts in it from po

- so no seal here - right ?
thanks

i gues sif it was leaking then it was good to take it apart. the po must have removed it and not put all the bolts back in. i am guessing it probably had a paper gasket there. i would make sure those surfaces are clean and make a paper gasket. or buy one if you can. and then use some sort of sealer on both sides of the gasket to stop any leaks. i cant see how taking this out of the pumpkin could throw off the lash of the gears.

That is your pinion shim...and the only seal is that black O ring...nothing else. You 'll have to check backlash again(should be fine)and make sure all (if more than one)metal shims go back in place. Black RV sealant goes around your third member...where it connects to 9" housing. In order to change Yoke seal...you need to pull the pinion nut off...probly better to do after its back together
I've had enough and I'm not alone
