Are they the same? 2wd NP 435 & Divorced NP 435

Post by Doug F »

I have a 2wd NP 435 that is low mileage and would like to sell it, but need to know if it is the same as came on 67-72 F-250 4x4s.

Thanks guys!

Its probably the same from a two wheel drive to a f250 4x4. however the f100 4x4 would probably be differant because it had the mated transfer case where the f250's were "divorced" So I cant see the f250s and 2wds being differant.

No its not the same, it has a different tail shaft housing with no speedometer hole, bolts to mount the T-case shifter, and no speedo gear on the tail shaft. The aluminum shift tower and shifter are also different. Everything can be swaped out on the main body of the trans though. Internally, they are the same.

Here is a thread I did a while back that highlights the differences: http://www.fordification.com/forum/view ... lit=+np435

EXCELLENT Bill! That is 100% the info I needed!

I was looking to swap the 2wd trans into my F-100 and didn't realize the pieces that would need to be changed. Well I found a 77 435/205 that is complete, to swap in instead which I know is a whole other ball of wax (whatever that means :hmm: )

Sadly your thread didn't come up when I did a search... :?

Thanks again!

Would I then get a 78/79 Bronco cable? Is the end that goes into the speedometer the same?

I got the trans last week and took the lid off, it is clean and no wear on the gears or chips either. Should I open the T/C PTO cover and look for anything? It seems to shift nice and when turning the yokes by hand, all seems smooth... The trans shifts REAL NICE!

Now for the new short shaft... I measure about 18.5", is this what others have gotten too? That is ctr of U-joint to ctr of U-joint. Should I just look for another shaft out of a Bump and have it shortened, of should I see if I can find one out of a Dent and hope the bearing collar will work the same?

Thanks guys!

Maybe I missed something but what are you trying to do? It sounds like you want to go with a divorced setup in your truck?

Sounds like he got a 77 NP 435 and I'm assuming married NP205 transfer case out of a F150 or Bronco. But maybe I misread it.

Hey Guys...
After re-reading everything, I never actually mentioned in detail what was going on...

I got an NP 435 with a married NP205 T/C from a 77 F-150 and I am trying to put it into my 67 F-100. I questioned the using a Bronco speedo cable due to there being 2 different lengths listed for the F series. Then there is my whole driveshaft shortening.

Does anyone have a picture of the T/C side mount that bolts to the frame? My trans & T/C didn't come with it.

Thanks!

Doug, I can get a pic from a 78 F250 w/ married NP 205. Not sure if it's the same as the one from a 77 F150 or not, but I'd bet its the same or real close. It'd be tomorrow before I can get a pic of it.

Doug, here's some pics of the married 205 Tcase mounts off of my 78 F250.

Tcase to frame:

Outside of the frame bracket:

For the 73 to 77 F series trucks I believe that the reason for 2 speedo cable lengths is that the shorter one was for the F100/150 with the married transfer case. The longer one would be for the F250's with a divorced transfer case. My guess is that the Bronco speedo cable is the same length as the shorter cable for the F series trucks. But that's just a guess. I haven't swaped my married 205 into my truck yet, but IIRC from my research, Use the shorter cable from the dent era trucks and then you have to remove the tip that goes into the speedometer in the dash. Remove the tip from your original speedo cable and use it on the new cable and everything should work fine. At least thats the jist of what I understood from asking about this swap.
