Pulling out my C6 tranny

Post by 1971 f250 »

Hey guys I just got a 1971 ford f-250 xlt ranger camper speacial the other day with a bad transmission and am having a heck of a time getting it out! Looks like I have to pull the engine and transmission out together to get to it? I have a 360 with a c6 automatic tranmission. Does anyone have any advise on how to get this thing out without pulling the engine? Thanks

you have to pull out the transmission frotn crossmember too. the one between the radius arm brackets. once the botl sare loose. hit on side with a hammer and drive it forward. that will **** it so that the crossmember will come out.

Even then I still had a pain getting it out. You might try taking out both crossmembers front and rear of the tranny. Or take off the transmission mount then slide the transmission aft and drop the front then slide it forward and drop the rear.

Even on my "little 302" (as some folks here call them)...I don't see how it can be done without dropping both cross-members. I've only got about one inch behind the upper bellhousing bolts to work with. And like Fordman said, the radius arm cross-member is a pain and very tight to get in and out. Seems like once both cross-members were out of the way it could be done though? :hmm:

Not necessarily in this order, but I did the following:

1. Disconnect driveshaft from tail of trans
2. Disconnect exhaust piping from headers and remove
3. Disconnect shifter & kickdown linkage
4. Disconnect trans coolant lines, speedo cable, modulator vacuum hose
5. Remove front x-member
6. Remove torque converter bolts
7. Unbolted starter from trans bell housing, left resting on headers
8. Remove trans x-member
9. Remove bell housing bolts
10. With back of motor supported, slide trans back and lower

Note: The photos below are actually a resequenced installation, but you get the idea.
