Dana 24 support strut

Post by 1971ford »

I was looking over my boss's '70 highboy, more closely this time than last, and found a few interesting mods.

One was this. He pulled one of the covers off the dana 24 and made a new cover, with rubber sandwhiched in between and made a support strut because he couldn't stand the typical dana 24 t-case wobble that everyone's probably familiar with.

Thoughts? Considering doing the same for now until i get a NP205 installed.

Another cool thing was this PTO he hooked up to the np435 when he planned on running a PTO winch, he said he never found a PTO winch so it never got used.

Cool stuff like that support. Have you got any pics of the other end of that thing. Just trying to get a good idea of what is going on.

The tube simply terminated into a plate that was bolted to the bottom lip of the frame rail with two bolts.

I'm interested to see what some thoughts are about it. If there is no reason not too then I"ll be whipping up one of these for my highboy. Should only be an hour to two hours of fab time and i'd have a nice simple support strut for the dana 24 until i go np205...

I have been thinking about doing the same thing, the only thing that might be a problem is too much load on the 4 bolts
they take all the thrust load from the bearings and I would worry about adding extra load.
I was thinking about connecting it to the PTO cover it has 8 bolts and caries no load :2cents:
The project is worth the time and on my short list.

That is a good point about the load on those four bolts, but I think it will be just fine. That bearing shouldn't be under stress in 2wd, so the day to day beating the truck takes from vibration, etc. on the highway won't bother it. I think it might actually be the lesser of two evils to have it on there because stabilizing the unit might help with vibration and keeping the lines of force nice and straight.
Worst case scenario, you trash an old dana 24...

If you wanted to get crazy you could bolt a nice big piece of plate to the pto cover, then weld it to a plate like the one in the picture (only bigger) and make an awesome rock crawler bash guard / stabilizer. But that seems silly.

Does anyone know how that PTO works? Does it have a gear that just idles off the input, then an internal clutch?

That PTO looks like it is for a drive line, I have one that accepts a 2 bolt hydraulic pump with a Vickers vane pump if you need one,it fits a NP-435
PM me if you are in need.

Honestly, I need a PTO about as much as a fish needs a bicycle. I just think they are awesome for some reason...

I think I am going to make one of those struts though. I plan on leaving the original cover intact, replacing the bolts with studs and nuts, then putting the strut plate on top of that with some kind of rubber (read "piece of old tire") in there to dampen vibration. If it looks shady, I will weld something else up that catches the PTO cover.

I still don't know how I feel about the dana 24. The NP 205 is obviously a better design, but the dana 24 I have is one of the few original parts on the truck, and it has obviously been abused pretty badly for over 40 years and still works just about like a new one would. It doesn't even leak...

So on one hand it seems dumb to put a lot of work into making a strut for the dana. But on the other hand, my truck is for work, not for some kind of hillbilly fashion show, and the dana works just fine...

I have a 24 in my truck that I just overhauled with new mounts,I have no complaints however with the NP-435 and it's low 1st I rarely used low range.
Now with the M5R2 I will be using low range more the 24 may not serve as well in the future :hmm:
