C4 Bellhousing

Post by novaboy009 »

I have a '71 F-100 with a 302/C4. The bellhousing has a crack running from the bottom lip upwards towards the pump. It's my understanding that these things come out fairly easily on the Fords. I have a Chevy too and you need to cut the bellhousings off with a hacksaw to bolt up an aftermarket housing!

Questions:

I'm pulling the engine this week. Do I pull the transmission at the same time, or can I leave the trans in the truck and replace the bellhousing with it still hanging in the truck?

Do the '71's have case mounted or pump mounted bellhousings? I'd like to buy the bellhousing in advance before I start ripping everything apart.

Could the bellhousing be welded? I was just checking evilbay and there like $100 plus dollars there.

I think I might be able to find one local for $50. No big deal. The crack is pretty huge. I don't know if I'd be comfortable with a weld on it. And I'm a lot better parts changer than I am a welder :D I don't know any welding specialists local.

I'm between Greenville and Columbia SC. What part of NC is Cameron? That might actually work... or if you'd be willing to ship I would pay!!!

the pan fill c4's are truck bellhousings. the case fill c4's are car bellhousing. one of them will fit the other but not the other way around. i forget which one will fit which one now. the bells can be welded. i was told on here that brazing them is best. as far as cutting it off. you dont have to they bolt on. i would pul it any way yo ufeel at ease doing. its about the same amount of work.

So this one is a case fill, and looks like it bolts in with the 7 pump bolts.

I'm assuming this one is like our F100 housing. It's a 5 bolt - I think that's the case mounted one.
