Re: Trans Swap
no 4 speed autos will bolt right to a 390. you will have to use a 3 speed auto.

Re: Trans Swap
or get an adapter. the aod and e40d dont have the same bellhousing pattern as the 360/ 390 engines do.

Re: Trans Swap
You can get a JW Ultra Bell for an AOD in at least 335/385 pattern. What you do is take your AOD to a welding shop and spend about $50 to have the old bell cut off and four holes tapped into the case to accept the Ultra Bell. Done. Had I not changed the engine in my Torino from a 351M to a 351C, I would be doing this step next, about a year from now. But since the mechanic installed the torque converter wrong on my FMX (after I spent $40 to get a small pattern bell for it) he busted the front pump and now since I need a transmission, I'm doing the AOD swap now.
Those JW Ultra Bells can be had for $330-$400 or so from various suppliers. I think Lentech has them, Summit, even eBay sometiems has them. The AOD to BBF part number is 92454-AOD, the bell runs about $330, and then you get a bolt kit so the bolts can reach, that runs you about $13. JEG's has the bolt kit but not the bell, at least not in their online catalog, maybe if you call in the order they can get you one. But don't pay more than $330 or so because you can get 'em straight from JW for that.
But as far as putting an AOD behind an FE, there's adapters out there. I don't think there's a bellhousing kit like JW makes. That would be the most ideal setup, then you're not worrying about lining everything up with that extra space to deal with. So you can try PATC, they make a kit for and AOD behind an FE includes everything you'd need:

#56FE. Adapter to install an AOD transmission on a Ford FE motor. This kit includes everything including the starter. Cost $850.00
It's a little more than halfway down the page. They also offer a kit to put a 700R4 behind the FE for $875. There's even a kit to put an AOD behind a Y-Block for $850.

Bentsden has the same adapters for the most part, same pricing too. Also carries M-E-L adapters to AOD or GM for $995.
