68 f250 4x4 -divorced transfer case or what?

Post by Whateverman »

I usually avoid 4x4's like the plague but:
i checked out a 68 f250 4x4 the other day (really quick,it was p!$$'n rain and getting dark) has a 360 or 352 w/auto trans and either the trans or the engine ( can't remember which ) is toast, interior is in primo condition, cab mounts good ,rad support good, grille is A-1, boxand most of the sheetmetal is dent and rust free (except that the roof is rotten above the windshield) i'm trying to get it for $200 or less...so we'll see.
i'm trying to score it for parts, but i also have a tendency to feel pity on fallen soldiers & try to fix any bumps i come across
(and i have an NP435 and a 551 looking for a home) ..so do these trucks have divorced transfer cases? if i'm shoving a manual trans in place of an auto in this thang what other things would hafta be replaced (driveline wise)?
as always any and all help is greatly appreciated :D
- still got my first first car 20+yrs later : 69 f100 sorta kinda pretending its a Mercury M100 w/a 70 f350 sport custom cab (factory buckets) 67 grille with 69 ranger cooneyes 68 merc box and hood, some supercool fiberglass fenders i scored way back when, 76 f150 disc brake frontend..currently running a 90 5.0HO 4bbl/c4 auto & 3.50 posi...originally a 360/c6 f100 Ranger with dealer added towpack (incl. kelsey hays trailer brake),boxside toolbox, behind the seat stowage & belly tank...only original parts left on 'er are the frame, rear end, rear springs, and rear bumper...

afaik all F-250 4x4s came with a divorced transfer case. They all came with manual transmissions also so it was converted to an auto at some point. I doubt it was converted to married transfer case when it was converted to an auto. Its possible though I guess. I would guess it would be pretty east to convert it back to manual but would probably need a longer intermediate drive shaft between the trans and tranfer case.

IIRC in 1968 there were 2 engines available, the 360 and the 300-I6. Of course a lot could have been converted in the last 43 years LOL. There is a difference in the 2wd and 4wd F250 NP435 transmissions. The tailshaft housing has the same bolt pattern, but the 4wd version has a place for mounting the transfer case shifter that the 2wd version does not. If you can get a F250 4wd 435 tail shaft housing it will bolt onto a 2wd 435 transmission provided it came with a divorced transfer case. The F100 435 transmissions with the mated transfer case has a different bolt pattern on the tailshaft housing than the 2wd or F250 4wd versions and this housing will not bolt onto the 2wd 435 tranny. I recently did the swap since I had a good 2wd np 435, and a bum 4wd one. Here is a thread highlighting the swap of the parts necessary to convert one.

nice! thanx guys. The np435 i have is originally out of a mid 70's 2wd f250 camper special so the info's good to know for sure.
I'm calling the truck i'm lookin at a 68 because the grille is a 68,god only knows what year the truck actually is,couldn't get the doors open to check the tags cuz it was locked up
however - i'm pretty sure the truck IS a factory auto tranny truck & i've seen at least 4 of them before ( all 70-72 big block trucks ) while scrounging thru the crush pile @ the wrecker (10 yrs or more ago)...who knows maybe its a Canadian thing....kinda like the 69 f350 crewcab sporting a special order 428(!) didn't believe that until the original owner pulled out the paperwork..the block was cracked, but its still a shame he wouldn't part with it
anyways, thanx again and if anyone else has some more wisdom to impart its much appreciated as well
