Need to change the trans fluid. Hate that it does not have a drain plug.
Looking to simply buy a new pan. Notice there are some with larger sizes (summit has a +2qt AL, Stef's has a +1qt AL).
Anyone use these? I was up under the truck, and noticed I have about 1-1.5 inches of extra clearance (71 F-250 2WD) between the crossmembers.
Wondering if anyone has tackled this issue before.
New Transmission Pan options - Summit, Stef's?

Re: New Transmission Pan options - Summit, Stef's?
on dentsides. the few i seen in 78 79 area the 4wd had a deeper pan than the 2wd do.
i am not sure why anyone would need a larger pan. would it help tokeep the fluid cooler by having more to heat up? if so then the more fluid the better. so the larger pan would be better.
if it doesnt do that then instead of buying a new pan. i have read that you can go to the parts store and buy a drain plug that can be installed in your old pan. now this drain plug woul dbe ok. because pulling a full pan just to change the fluid can be messy. but as a note to others who dont know. if you are changing the fluid you shoul also drain the converter and change the filter inside of the pan.

If you get a pan with a larger capacity, be sure it comes with a spacer to relocate the pick-up.
When you change the fluid you should change the filter also.
No, I have not changed my pan, only researched it some.

X2 on what has been said. More fluid definately means cooler fluid. Is it nesecarry for you is aq different story. You gotta make sure your replacement pan is quality material and not a flimsy thin stamping or you'll never get it to seal. I might be inclined to retain the original and invest in an aux. cooler instead.
