That is mega, awesome build up - can't believe that suspension work - love to see it in the air at speed!....I had a vision of a parallel universe where a giant 10 year old kid with a really big remote control races it against another kid with a jeep or early bronco

Very nice work. I think you might actually like working on them more than driving them though

Yeah I have some extra advantages now, need to find a car hauler to mega huck offfomocoguy wrote:Wow that's a lot of travel! Now if you get in a police chase you can jump a loading ramp or car hauler just like in the movies! All kidding aside very nice work.
Sweet, post a build thread!Ryno F-250 wrote:Great looking truck, I am gonna be doing something similar to mine. (probly not that extreme though) Great build!
Rear for this season is going to be long travel leaf springs (Deavers) with 7" shackles and 2.5x16 resi shocks (most of this i ran last season). I will be making the truck a short wheel base before this season as long as i dont run low on time. Season after this, I will be 4 linking the truck to keep up with the frontRanchero50 wrote:So with the front end so articulating do you need to do something in the rear as well? 4 links or?

Thanks, I can't wait to see what it can doAussie_1970 wrote:That is mega, awesome build up - can't believe that suspension work - love to see it in the air at speed!....I had a vision of a parallel universe where a giant 10 year old kid with a really big remote control races it against another kid with a jeep or early bronco
Thanks! I'm going to have to say I like driving it mroe than working on it by farFormerMarine1981 wrote:Very nice work. I think you might actually like working on them more than driving them though
Fabricating things is pretty fun but driving the truck is unbeatable..

Re: 1971 f250 DESERT truck- 1/31 It rolls!
Made a sweet tie rod out of some well seasoned and weather treated tubing so i can push it on to the car trailer (hint hint)
Trimmed the front autofab fenders. My dad didnt notice until i told him so i guess that's a good sign. Final touches to be made.
Then I did a very sad deed.
I cut the front bumper off.
The skid plate section had to go atleast because of cross over steering, and the rest of the bumper went because it lined up badly with the grill after hanging the fenders/grill. The fenders and grill are dead on and lined up. Something must of been wrong with the core support/inner fenders or something which is what we lined the grill up to. WEIRD.
The new bumper may be similiar or may be totally differen't im not sure. I'm thinking of going TT bumper status. Small low-profile bumper. Because i have come to realize that no vehicles rear bumper is as high as my front bumper was. The rubber pad we attached to the light hoop was a good foot above anyones bumper.
pretty sure this is ride height, or atleast very close. it's hard to find what exact ride height is going to be without having tires perfectly toed. With this ride height and trimmed fenders everyone can see my super awesome coilovers haha

What is the purpose of having it sit low in back?

I have no ideajp2005 wrote:Ryan thats pretty cool! Hows it drive?
It's no where near drivable yet.
Still needs everything steering wise, needs spindles, dual hanger crossover steering, steering box mounts (moving box to front of frame), new steering shaft and new "steering column" (piece of shaft running through heim). And it doesn't have a tranny in it right now, engine was just set in to make the engine cage. Then I have to get the driveshafts made, but can't do that until i shorten the wheelbase, basically it will be a while before it moves under its own power.
Actually in the above pictures it will sit even lower in the back. With race weight. The back sits higher than the front does right now.dcbullet wrote:What is the purpose of having it sit low in back?
You dont want to have it sit too low in the back because then you lose bump travel which is a little more important than droop but droop is still important. You can jack the rear of the truck (more spring arch) up so you have much more up travel but then you need to match it with the front end to not look totally rediculous, and then you're center of gravity is going to be a little too high for comfort...

Re: 1971 f250 DESERT truck- 2/3 front end
Good question
Start of new bumper
pulled the engine out. First time with engine cage.
PERFECT fit. Didn't have to remove a single thingh. Had less than a 1/4 clearance but it came right out and took same amount of time it would have with no engine cage, not including time to pull shocks and bump truck out so i could get the engine over the cage.
Fully built ATO C6 with fresh rebuild going in. This tranny is probably worth more than the entire rest of the truck
Probably because it knows how to skate

Re: 1971 f250 DESERT truck- 2/6 trans/bumper
and now it's happy!
worked late after school today. Picked up my $120 worth of amsoil synthetic racing tranny fluid (super fancy i suppose, it's what ATO performance told me to put in the tranny). Filled the torque converter and slipped it on (using stock converter, the converter that was in the tranny was a 2700 stall).
Then I dropped the engine back in, mated it up, and bolted it down. This of course, a very long process.
Had to run out and get a new tranny mount too, my old one was showing signs of wear.
Spent a few minutes cleaning up the engine, not going to go too crazy making it look nice because it should begetting rebuilt next offseason.
coilovers back on and rolling again, this time with a drivetrain.
Rear tranny mount is way off, the crossmember is too low and too far forward, I'll probably just fab a new one.

Google "Cat Photobomb," Cats are rediculous. That cat has been in more than a few of 1971ford's posts.Fordman5 wrote:Why do cats always sit in the strangest places????
By the way, my 12 year old son thinks you are super cool. After spending an hour checking out your 2wd to 4wd frame swap, he wants to sell his 1979 Scout and find a bump. That's quite a relief to me. THANKS.

Re: 1971 f250 DESERT truck- 2/10 drivetrain in
AWESOME!
I really need to make a summed up version of both my project threads. They're both to the point where I don't think any one would ever have the time to look at all the updates. Glad there are people still checking out the old updates. I try to make sure all the photos remain active.
Today I added more tubes.

I did. About a month ago. I looked at every picture in this thread. Only skimmed some of the text, told myself I would actually read it all someday.1971ford wrote: AWESOME!

I did notice that early on in this thread you mentioned a race at Hawthorn. I assume that's the City of Hawthorn, CA near where I live in Los Angeles. If you ever do a race near to where I live, post an announcement so I can try to go watch. I will venture to say that there are others here that would want to do the same if you're in their area.
