If the angle is as harsh as in your sketch above then yea something is definitely wrong. I just went out and checked the Z-Bar on both the '71 and the '67 parts truck, there is a bracket bolted on top of the frame rail that one end of the bar rides on, the other end is connected to the rear of the block via a stud or bolt (bolt threaded into block on the '67 however the 302 in it isn't stock so I'm unsure if it was a stud or bolt there from the factory as the '71s is coated in too much grease to tell). I took a couple of pictures of the linkage on each truck, I will try and upload them by the end of the night.

Okay here are the pictures from both trucks (first set from the '67, second set from the '71), they didn't turn out too well with the poor lighting under the hood but you should be able to make out the bracket on the frame and the fact that the Z-bar pivots on a stud/bolt from the block:

Hope that helped you out a little bit .

yes the small block perches go to the front of the crossmember. there should be hole there. here are pictures of the two sets of holes. wel they are hard to see becuase of dirt an dthen the shadow in the next picture. but you cna see the lower front hole in the crossmember for the forward perch position.

OK i checked it out tonight. I do have small block mounts. They are also in the correct place. I do have a hole in the side of the block. The PO used a bracket that went on the bellhousing bolts. The hole in the block is about an inch and a half to low. The bracket doesn't line up any better. Any other ideas? Was it a different frame bracket or was it in a different spot? He did tell me he used some stuff from a 77 for the clutch.

you at the transmission crossmember then. maybe its the wrong one. or the wrong transmission rubber mount. they are different between auto and manual. one of them is shorter than the other one. as well there is also a slight offset on the moutning holes form different transmissions.

The z-bar that came with a truck I bought with no engine but it did have a small block, has 2 brackets. One looks like it goes to the frame the other goes to the bellhousing.Maybe you need this bracket.

Do you have any pictures of the bellhousing bracket? Also what year was it?

I took a closer look at the truck and I think the bracket goes this way.

that bracket is different than the 390 bracket. so maybe they put the wrong bracket on the engine side. but i am not sure the 390 bracket will bolt onto the 302. as the botl holes are in different places. well they are further apart. and in different places for both holes to line up.

I don't think the bracket was on the 390.I think it was installed with the 302.I bought the truck without an engine but I know it had a 302 because I han to remove the 302 perches and put in FE perches to install my 390.

The z-bar on my highboy looks the same as FoMoCos drawing, When i pulled my truck down to the frame someone thought my z-bar and frame bracket looked like scrap and junked it. I got a z-bar from a dent to put on it and now its tilted like the picture because the dent frame bracket is taller than a bumps. The dent has a 1 5/8" pivot point from the frame from what ive measured. And looks to be a 1/2" higher than the one that came on my truck. Can someone measure the pivot point on a bump frame bracket to see the difference ? I know why mine is tilted is because of the frame bracket, just thought some measurements would help FoMoCo find where his problem is.
