here we go again...
ok i had the c-4 in my 67 rebuilt just before x-mas...got stuck in the snow the other day and now it sounds kinda like something is not engaging properly...drives ok,no slipping but makes an awful "roar" when driving. The sound seems to increase/decrease depending on how fast the drive shaft is turning not the engine rpms...any ideas before i have to pull the tranny to bring it back to tranny shop???or could this be a rear end issue???

Re: here we go again...
It's dangerous...I'm not saying to do it...but if it were mine?
I'd get it on jackstands with the wheels chocked with two people and listen to it.
Might also be a dry universal joint.

Re: here we go again...
universal joints are new, that was my first thought...packed them with grease myself...sound is kind of a whurring, dry rear axle maybe...didnt check the wheel bearings yet, :hw:also if iput the truck in neutral and coast the sound goes away...
just did some quick looking around and found a 8.8 inch rear end out of a late 80's to early 90's ford truck locally on craigs list for 175 or best... will this work in my truck while i rebuild the 9 inch ???? or or not rebuild the 9 inch

Re: here we go again...
It more than likly is the rear. If it was spining and then getting traction and grabbing. I broke a tooth off the pinion gear and it would roar when it was under load or letting off gas. Don't know about The 8.8.Just my

I have done that before.basketcase0302 wrote:It's dangerous...I'm not saying to do it...but if it were mine?

I would look at the U-Joints, I have installed U-joints before that where bad a week later. Just poor quality of things these days. If you had U-Joint issues before I would check where the drive shaft connects to the yoke as well. I have seen those get flared out and cause the same symptoms.

Prolly axle bearing of diff. Bad axle bearings can not always be diagnosed by pulling a wheel and rotating the axle by hand. Sometimes you have to slide the axle out and spin the bearing by hand. If it is a bad axle bearing do not replace it with a Chinese bearing or you will be replacing it again soon. Bower/BCA bearing or equivalent.

Re: here we go again...
There should be a number stamped on the bearing. depending upon which side it is stamped on, you may have to get the bearing off to get to where you can read the number.
