I think I will stick with my 7.3 turbo. But if anyone want's it we have a 97 Dodge 1 ton at the farm with it's 3rd 5.9 in 320k. It's running........for now.

I've never owned/worked on a power stroke. I was taking the word of the guys who have.
So, okay, let's try this one, an engine control computer for a PS lists at $599.99 (I checked this time. )
An engine control computer for an IDI costs how much? J/K
You like your Power Stroke, that's fine, I'm not trying to get into a which is better argument. I was just disputing the idea the IDIs were unreliable fuel sucking turds. I've never heard that to be the case, the only complaints I ever hear of the IDI are power complaints. And not all of us need 300HP to get the job done.
Now, the early GM diesels...........
So, okay, let's try this one, an engine control computer for a PS lists at $599.99 (I checked this time. )

I know this is a old thread but eh, the early gm diesel ( 5.7l ) seemed to be more of a expirement. the 6.2 was better but not by much. They got great fuel economy. Im suprised no one mention a detroit. 3-53, 4-53 Ive even seen a 6v-53t . Now THATS and engine if you want to be unique. I wouldnt bother with a perkins Ive worked on alot of 6-100s, there not that great and in a truck youd want a turbo on it for sure but the cranks didnt like the turbos.As far as the 6.9 and 7.3s I think it comes down to how you treat them. I think some people are harder on their stuff than others. Like was said earlier not every one needs obsene amounts of power to get the job done. Id tow with a idi 7.3 If you keep clean oil in them and a good cooling system I think they can acheive just as many miles as the next engine. I manage a fleet of buses with 7.3 psd you can get 200k on a set of injectors HPOPs virtually never go out, clean oil and a good cooling system, i keep them until 450k then im contracted to get rid of them. usually never have the heads off of them and the drivers beat the living piss out of them. "phew" ok im done thats my right there. enjoy. what did this guy ever end up doing with his truck??

7.3 powerstroke it!! Got 190000+ on my 02 so far a set of glows, clutch, and alternator are the biggest things. Starts fine and runs great all the time. Go for what suits you man. 5.9 is great diesel as is lots of others mentioned but you gotta use what suits your like.

I like how diesel conversions are pretty mainstream today compared to a couple years ago. The mechanical and commonrail Cummins engines and the Duramax engines have really impressed a lot of people.

Yeah Ive been impressed with the duramax. they seem to be written off very easily but they put down some incredible numbers and they dont seem to have very many mechanical problems. That engine with the allison trans ( under 500 hp) seems to be a winning combo. yeah the mechanical cummins is just a pretty bullet proof engine in a long rectangular box. With good regular maintenance and not to much tampering ( i.e grinding fuel cones, massive amounts of fuel, and a poor attitude) they really go the distance there really isnt a whole lot to dispute there. Ive seen a couple failures but even then they werent power induced. Im sure its happened but I have yet to come across one. And they are alot more common in the last few years. I think mainly because diesels are small enough now and make good power there appealing to people. Who would want to swap in a 5.7 olds diesel into their 5,000lb truck and go hauling with it? If you wanted something in that era ( being the 70s) you really didnt have a whole helluva lot of options. what did they have? detroits? but they were heavy loud and big, perkins which werent powerhouses and were on the large side. mercedes they were unsafly slow even in a car. Wow that turned into a rant, sorry......
