HELP == Broken Clutch Rod

Post by 3 Speed »

If that is what you call the rod going from the pedal assembly through the floor to the clutch.

Mine broke yesterday about 100 yards from my house, switching gears from first to second. Got to my driveway before the truck stalled out. Thank goodness there is no neutral safety switch -- I used the starter and the downhill to get into the garage, since I could not switch to neutral.

This rod broke just below where it bends to go through the pedal assembly/arm. Just snapped.

It appears to be an easy replacement, but did it break because the clutch seized, locked, etc.?

Any advice appreciated.

The pivot point is metal on metal and it wears out,years ago I needed to rebuild it.It was an easy job with a welder
Just build up the wornshaft and the arm redrill hole and grind rod mine has lasted years. :2cents:

yes the plastic bushing probably wore out and wore through the metal of the rod.

Since I am no welder, I ordered a replacement rod, the two bushings, and the rod boot that covers the hole in the floor. The rod is coming from Green Sales, on recommendation from Dennis Carpenter.

Anybody know which way that boot is supposed to point? The original in my truck is all in pieces. The Dennis Carpenter part no. is C5TZ-7A533-A. Does the tube point down through the floor into the engine bay, or the other way?

Thanks, Fordman. I just bookmarked that page, and I hope I can find another that shows how the plastic bushing is situated.

the plastic bushing (7526) in that last link. just slips over the rod. and then through the holes. with a kotter key holding it in to the bracket or lever.

Where does the front end of the clutch release spring attach? Mine came loose while I was installing the new rod.

I did not find a schematic on the site to help.

I'd be curious to know where that's supposed to be hooked too. I just hung mine back up in a little pocket by the crossmember/steering gear/I beam hanger area. If you grab the end of the spring and start stretching it back, it's the only pocket you'll find to hook it in.

I found a small round hole on the frame cross member (?) under the engine, in line with the other end of the spring. Putting the spring there seemed (1) to be in a straight line and (2) to give enough tension, not too much.

Now if I can figure out why the truck will not stay running...
