Took the highboy out for the first time for some offroading, and found that in slippery conditions it was no better than 2wd because the tire with least traction spun in the front and same with the rear.
I have a buddy that just came across his old truck's ('74 f250) 4.11 posi sitting on a shelf. He says its just the posi and there is a ring gear on it that is 4.11. He doesn't know if he has the pinion or not.
I know little about gearing/differentials sadly, something i haven't had a chance to research yet. When you get a posi does it have to be specific to your gearing or does it just have to be a D60 posi? Would a 4.11 posi work on the 4.10 gears in my rear? Can't put it up front on the 4.11's up front because obviously that's not a d60.
So will this 4.11 posi work on my 4.10 gears? How hard is it to install a posi? I've pulled gears and re-installed them in dana 60's before but that was just lincoln locking the spiders.

Carrier break is 4.10 down or 4.56 up on regular 60 gears. There are aftermarket thick gears for low speed gears on a high speed carrier and a low speed carrier can be modifed to run high speed gears by a good machinist.
The spline count is important.
74 D60 will more than likely be 30 spline. Bump 60's are 16 spline. Most dent limited slips were trac-locs. Not worth the iron they were cast from. You want a powerlock.

so you're saying even if it is a 16 splin and will work you wouldn't bother? What is bad about the trac-loc that is better on the powerlock? Where do i find a powerlock?

A trac-loc is an open diff that happens to have a couple clutches in it, they don't do anything. A powerlock is a posi that's tuneable, long lasting and works better than lockers in some applications.
A trac-loc isn't worth the work of installing it if it's free.
