I think the article needs updated. 69 was not the first year for the 435. I've had a mess of 67's with 435's.

Aluminum top= NP435. Pretty simple once you get that down.

what do you mean by "top", like where the shifted mounts to the top of the trans?

My 67 had an NP-435. the biggest give away was the "NP" on the side of the trans when I finally cleaned 40 years of crud off of it.

Yes, by "top" he was referring to where the shifter mounts at which is the top-plate of the transmission. Basically if you pull the hump cover the entire part of the tranny you are looking at is the top-plate or "top" that averagef250 was referring to and is aluminum.
