Re: 1971 f250 DESERT truck- 4/25 spring rebuild / fuel cell
got 7 tires dismounted and 7 mounted. I now have the 4 best 35's on the aluminum blade rims on the truck and 4 of the best spares on the new spare rims.Cost $85 to dismount/mount and balance all 8 wheels. I'm going to have to get used to this whole traction thing now
-Hooked up the remote filler assembly. Got a custom 2.5" to 3" bent piece of tubing from a muffler shop, plus a piece of filler hose, plus some clear filler hose, with the cap/mounting assembly on the end, welded to my cage.
-Cut/notched some 2" DOM for a spare tire/bed cage support, strapped a spare on.
-re-located my air horn tank. It was tacked to the bedside in a hurry so i made some tabs off the main hoop and bolted it on, out of the way.
-Cut holes in the bed for the fox shocks clearance. I hope i can get these things on next weekend.
-Got an email from the guy rebuilding my front shock, it should be done next weekend. I checked the pressure on my other shock that is still mounted and it has 0psi. I put 150 in it a month ago, so it needs to be rebuilt ASAP too
Group shot. Race truck and it's future chase truck and tow vehicle
Re-located air tank
Tire load up
With all the tire/rim weight in the bed, this is how it sat. I figure the weight of the tires/rims will be a little more than race weight, depending on how much fuel is in the fuel cell. It squat down to where it used to be... not bad
5 spares
spare tire "mounting"
WIth just this strap, i pulled on the tire in every direction as hard as i could and the truck body moved with it every time. IT isn't going anywhere, but i am going to run a Y strap. Two tabs welded to the new 2" cross bar and one tab welded to the rear bumper.

Re: 1971 f250 DESERT truck-5/2 tires, cell, spare
Sweet! Looking really really nice bud.
U gonna ad a air hose hookup and coil hose to the air tank? Can't remember if you covered that.

Re: 1971 f250 DESERT truck-5/2 tires, cell, spare
Thanks man!
Right now it is only the tank, no compressor. So adding air tools would just suck all the air out after removing one wheel with an impact. It is good for many air horn blasts though
-Cut/notched welded upper shock mounts. Set everything up for 16" 2.5's.
-Cut tabs for lower shock mounting (tabs welded to spring plates), they will be welded on and shocks will be mounted tomorrow after school.
-cut/notched/welded in two 1.5" tubing pieces between main bedcage rails, for secondary spare mounting. The second spare will simply sit on the top of the bed rails, ratchet'd down. I'm probably going to put a center cap in the middle to hold the wheel in place. A shredded/flat tire will still work up here, because i put the tubes close enough to each other that the rim can press against them.
both these tubing pieces are in spots where they are not dead tubes too. One connects the upper shock mounts and one goes between two bedcage uprights.
-cut out old spare positioning tubes that were at the rear of the bed/cage.
-extended rear brake lines
-mounted GPS
-built spare oil holder. It holds 7 quarts of oil.. 3 tranny, 3 engine, one rear diff... or something like that.

Re: 1971 f250 DESERT truck-5/9 GPS, 2nd spare, shock mount
Big thanks to my dad for this update. I had to work 15 hour work days saturday and sunday so i couldn't really touch the truck.
Here is waht my DAD did by himself...
-Mounted bumpstops up front, using some nice poly bumps donated from Mike Koenig off a 4runner, a spacer and some grade 8 bolts running through them.
-Strapped the rearend using limit straps donated from Koenig
-Spaced/shimmed the front and rear shocks so they stay put
What i did is i put a new fire extuisher in the mount on the care (hard work i know) and i put 120psi shop air into the fox shocks (hard work also. Will be replaced with nitrogen race day).
Front droop:
Front bump:
Rear droop:
I know i tilted this picture upright in paint, i have no idea why it is sideways again.
No rear bump pictures unfortunately because i'm too damn lazy to dissasemble the whole packs to see! Although i should...
Oh and i put window nets in. The looks that i get from kids and such while driving with the nets up is priceless. "daddy look at the race car!"
Testing next weekend! Althought it will not be hardcore testing due to no front shocks...

Re: 1971 f250 DESERT truck-5/16 bump/strapped
haha yeah, i get quite a few people saying "speedbump racing haha" but i'm sure they are thinking of speedbumps on the ground.... the original intent of the name was that my bumpside (bump) is speedy
But the other way, speedbump as in the bump on the road, works too since the truck is made to go over bumps fast

Re: 1971 f250 DESERT truck-5/16 bump/strapped
Guess what!!!
A 300 mile desert race in Yerington Nevada in one week!!!!!!! Yes, we're racing!
-replaced fuel filter
-borrowed a buddy's 10" 2.0 Fox reservoir shock and mounted it up front with my other 2.5x10 resi
-re-routed fuel cell vent over filler neck and around the fuel cell
-dad built a 7 quart capacity oil holder inside the bed
-I'm forgetting stuff for sure
Testing:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3QDgg8LkIko
Testing went great! With the fox shocks up front and in the rear the ride is incrediably smooth on and off road. I was very impressed with how it was soaking everything up in the dirt. I built the leaf packs to be smooth under race weight and that's what they did.
Side project relating to this build, is a chase bike for the race. A '75 Yamaha TT500
I won't go indepth with this here but heres one more picture. I'm rebuliding the fox air shocks right now.
5 days until we leave! Truck is getting towed up on a flatbed behind a buddy's dually.

Race report..
My dad wrote this for something else so i'll save myself some time and paste it here
Great weekend overall for the #71 (871) Ford. Carburetor was not happy with the altitude and caused lots of problems. Got nerfed pretty good by somebody in the first section, stalled engine while pulling over to let another car pass, then battery died trying to restart. This is about mile 5. No radio signal of course. Let engine cool hoping battery has one last start in it. No dice. Realize we are pointing down a really long hill and decide to coast down, staying mainly in the dirt off to the side of the course. coast as far as we can and start walking to CP1. Run into a fan with a 4x4 van who tows us up another access road where he releases us and we coast even farther. Got Ricks chase rig to meet us and give us a jump. lost about 2 hours overall. Ryan pushed the truck as hard as he could, we took some really hard hits in some of the whoops. Had to pull over to remove the right front shock that had torn it mounts loose. Stalled a few more times in slow uphill sections where Ryan couldn't keep the revs up and engine died. Managed to cross the start/finish to trigger the lap timer and pulled back around into the pits. Found that the tranny cooler had come loose and start beating a hole in the radiator. Decided we had too much unrepairable damage and dropped out.
Made liberal use of Ryan's air horn for all the spectators.
Ryan is one hell of a naturally talented driver.
Won $100 for slowest lap.
Overall, this one goes in the win column for us.
Damages noticed after one lap-
-Bent an i-beam
-ripped lower shock mount off front passenger side, broke off beam
-bent the shock shaft really good making the shock just a garage decorator
-tranny cooler broke off its mounts and made its way into the radiator
-tranny fluid all over, no power steering fluid left in pump
-front right tire (one of my 3 half decent but best 35's) has pretty good leak
Thats what i remember right now and thats what i have found from just walking around the truck.
The track was 1/3 smooth dirt road ("highway"), 1/3 semi-rough "highway" and 1/3 BRUTTAALLLL
In the highway section I'd push it to about 50mph... because at that speed i would start to lose steering due to lack of good tires. The brutal section consisted of LOTS of big rollers, and rocks. The rollers are what tore everything apart. They would sneak up on us and before i could slow down i'd hit the first one, bounce up and back down on the second roller, launching the front end twice as high, coming back down on the third roller, bottoming out the front end and launching it sky high, crashing back down. It was bad.
There was also a hill climb that consisted of purely fat jagged rocks.... as wide as the truck. Well it died in the middle of it and quickly we had a trophylite waiting on us. So i got itstarted and pinned it because anything less and the tires didn't even move in the altitude. The truck moved up the mountain very slowly, at a 45deg. angle. It was intense...
I planned on racing all 4 races but I think this might be the only race of the year.
I have a spare front end (I-beam, rotors, radius arms, etc.) that i had already stripped and painted even that i am going to put in. They are even 1 ton beams, much beefier and with 1" kinpins, and the radius arms would have new shock mounting. But I will have to rebend them which will be a pain.
I can get a new radiator and tranny cooler from the junkyard, and can swap out the flat tire.
Then i will have no shocks up front... need $400 just for that.
So I am now focusing all my attention on finishing my '69 f250 4x4.

Re: 1971 f250 DESERT truck- 6/1 Race Report!
What kind of options do you have for your front end besides the twin I beam setup? I think you need something way beefier then anything the factory offered.

Twin i-beam or a-arms, no sense in running a-arms.
I-beams are great offroad. I am very surprised i bent an i-beam, but the 1 ton beams won't bend for sure, especially after i plate them full length. I'm sure the bending of the beam had something to do with 5,000 pounds smashing down ontop of it when the shock was bent and binded, meanwhile breaking the lower shock mount..

i'm surprised that you havn't gone with 1 ton ibeams already. 35's are a little heavy to be flinging around on 1/2 ton parts.

They are 3/4 ton beams not 1/2 ton, but i've only heard of 1/2 beams bending once before on a heavily raced f100. Anyways, 1 ton beams it is.

Re: 1971 f250 DESERT truck- 6/1 Race Report!
Truck is now my daily driver again.
-Pulled 3/4 ton suspension off, trashed it.
-Grabbed my 1 ton spare beams, pie cut, bent, welded, plated, installed
-installed Napa auto parts $60 shocks as temporary replacements. I'm getting my bent shock shaft re-made.
-Swapped Saginaw steering box for a new Saginaw box that i stripped and POR-15's that doesn't leak!
-Swapped power steering pump for one that works, new power steering belt
-Swapped edelbrock carb for Holley 500 two barrel. Best decision EVER.
-yanked my burned out Holley red fuel pump and installed a Holley Blue pump and regulator
Old
New (1 ton). Pie cut, bent, welded, plated.
New Holley blue fuel pump and regulator and System 1 filter
Nice Derale tranny cooler mounted to replace the one that broke
New Holley 500 2 barrel carb that kicks my old edelbrock 750's butt! Also new Saginaw power steering pump stripped and POR-15'd that doesn't leak!!! New junkyard power steering pump that actually pumps now. New power steering belt.
Diehard Holley fan now...
I'm cutting the 3 cross tubes to fit my dirt bikes, i am going to make them removable.
