T5 in a truck?
I was wondering how many of you guys would be willing to put a foxbody mustang T5 that was behind a 302, behind a 300 in a '69 F150? The '69 in question already has a manual 3-speed behind the 300.
I don't know, I just figured the truck setup would kill it, but thinking about it I guess it wouldn't be too bad, since it was behind a 302.
My end-goal would be to get a truck that gets pretty good gas mileage, and maybe the occasional tow.

Re: T5 in a truck?
Why not just use a truck 5 speed like a M5r2 or a zf5 speed both of which are a much better tranny.
As far as T-5s I haven't heard good things about them in Mustangs so I can't see putting on in a truck.

Well, I have the T5, but no ZF or anything. I'm not sure which but it's got a manual 3-speed in it now, would 3rd gear most likely be geared so that it would give decent mileage at highway speed? Primarily I'm worried that I'm going to be revving it to the moon to keep up with traffic and thus, really killing the mileage.

If it's a world class T-5 you should be alright, the early non-WC are the redheaded step child.

Re: T5 in a truck?
Knowing it's a 3-on-the-tree standard, what's the best three-speed I could hope for in it?
If it's got a good final drive gear for cruising I probably wouldn't bother changing as long as it works, might end up changing rear tire size for the gear ratio to be different.

Re: T5 in a truck?
Well as far as the stock 3-speed in our trucks the best of the 2 versions of the 3.03 3 speed offered would be the RAT-V, RAT-W, and RAT-AF 3 speeds as they had the higher gearing of the two variations with a 2.42 first gear, 1.61 second, and 1.00 third with a reverse ratio of 2.33 but the final drive gear in both of them are still 1.00 as are the final drive gears in just about all of the manual trannys offered in my trucks to the best of my knowledge. The only way to get a better final-drive gear is to get an OD tranny which will give you a final drive gear of more than 1.00. One example of a Ford OD 3 speed is the T-85 it has a OD geared at .70. Here's some literature on the 3 speeds in our trucks as well as a little bit on the T-85:http://www.fordification.com/tech/transID-man.htm as well as another page on OD 3-speeds: http://www.fordification.com/tech/overdrive.htm

Re: T5 in a truck?
The t5 is the easy way to go. If you get an adapter you can use your original clutch and bell housing.I did this to my truck with a 300.Guys with foxbody mustangs put alot more power through t5s than mine will ever see.

I found an adaptor for early Mustangs for the swap. I wonder if the same adaptor would work on a 72 360 3-speed bell housing and use the stock clutch. If so, looks to be a easy swap.....not sure how the shifter would work out.

Re: T5 in a truck?
M-100 I sent you a PM. But if anyone eles can chime in, would a T5 from a early S10 be the way to go? They use a mechanical speedo, and the shifter is farther foward than the Mustangs. I know the clutch would have to be changed to the GM spline 11 intead of 10 (I think). But with the adaptor to the 360's stock bell housing and stock clutch linkage. Should be a easy....CHEAP swap

Re: T5 in a truck?
i'm probably wrong, but i recall reading that you use a ford spec t-5 with an s-10 tail shaft. it also moves the shifter forward enough to clear the bench seat.

Re: T5 in a truck?
I'm getting around to doing this swap the only hold up was the bellhousing. They actually have one on ebay now that will take all tremec transmissions and tko600. You'll be
using your stock fork and clutch pedal setup and would need to fab up a trans crossmember. This bellhousing is available for 429-460 and all Fe motors. I'm going with the Tko
600 I've had my run with the t5 it's a smooth shifting piece of scrap and the world class is running a close second. They'll never hold up to the power of any big block ford.
I would probably only run a t5 on a 6 banger!
