Steep Gears
My 2WD '70 F250 has what I believe are 4.10 gears according to the door tag. I do know that it revs like crazy going down the road at anything over about 45 MPH (really noticable with the headers). What is the best fix? I don't think taller tires will make a big enough difference. Do you guys generally change the center section or the whole axle? I'd like to get something like a 3.15 ratio. And I'm not concerned with the speedo since it doesn't work right now anyway. Thanks for your input!

Re: Steep Gears
You shouldn't have to replace or do anything to the axles. I bought a ring and pinion kit for mine to take it down to 3.00. I got the ring/pinion kit from National Drivetrain.

Re: Steep Gears
Great info, thanks! I only mentioned the possibility of swapping the rear end as a unit because that is what I did with an AMX 10 years ago when I wanted to drive it to the Woodward Cruise. I bought a complete rear axle with the gears I wanted, swapped over and bled the brakes, checked the lube and was good to go. I never even removed the back cover.
I guess my next step is to positively ID what rear axle I have in case it was swapped already at some point (definitely possible) and start looking for a gear set or complete axle on craigslist.

Re: Steep Gears
Swapping the rear is the easiest and fastest for the average person but behore you get too excited, it will be very hard to find a rear that will fit with gears higher than 3.73. There are 3.54's for the Dana 60 but I have not found any in 67-72 trucks and they are not common in 73-79 trucks (which does not fit). I would ask about your tire size though as I have several F250's and F350's and they are all 3.73 and 4.10 and I don't have your issue. The shortest tire you should be running is just under 31 inches but on most of mine I am running a 33. On the trucks with 4.10's, I am running 35's on my 4X4 and 33's on the CrewCab and both F350's.
