I pulled the hub apart to fix another issue and noticed that the red part of the hub that you grab to lock or free the hub is broken therefore it doesn't do anything when i turn it, although i thought it did.
On the back of the red piece there are the two little tabs that have holes in them that a metal rod goes through, well both my little tabs broke apart and let the metal rod roam wildly.
So I need to pick up another one of these red thingys that you turn, but how the heck do you install it is the question?
It looks to me as if the rod must be in the red piece then the red piece goes on and somehow the rod needs to get into two grooves that are deep inside the hub. I see no possible way of doing this. I know what i just said doesn't make a whole lot of sense to most but for those of you that have been inside a ford locking hub it should make sense.
I just put my hub back together without the rod for now

Re: Ford locking hub
The pin was attached to the red piece at 2 places 180* apart then the pins engage with the metal piece that has the spiral groves,so that when you turn the red piece ti pulls the metal piece back to disengage the hub.
If you can not find a new red piece let me know I need new ones also I will get some aluminum and make 2 sets.I have been driving with locked hubs for too long

Re: Ford locking hub
My drivers side is all WARN and passenger side is ford. Ford side broke... figures.
At least for now i am just going to replace this little plastic piece. I plan on a whole axle swap down the road so don't really want to bother with buying a warn setup for the passenger side.

Re: Ford locking hub
Thinking I am just going to ditch the ford stuff as BigBlue suggested and go with the more expensive WARN locking hub that the drivers side already has. It has an aluminum turn knob so I can't break this one...
Only problem is i can only find them for sale in a pair for $160. Not interested in buying 2 when I already have 1.

Just think... you'll have a spare! Not a bad thing to have out in the boonies.
FWIW... I have Warn hubs on my Bronco & have had no problems, but I've heard plenty of Ford guys whose opinions I trust, standing by the stock Ford hub.
