Help with "tightening" question

Post by Negative »

Hey guys, long time no see. But I am still here. and I still have the 69 F250.

The issue is that I have to push up on the shifter when it is in park so I can start the truck. Not really that big of a deal, but it bothers me that it is loose somewhere. Its an automatic, on a 2wd 69, so thats what? A C-6? I think so - according to VIN decoders. Not positive as I am not a tranny guy, nor have I ever been. I can change the filters and pan gaskets and check fluids but thats about it.

Anyway, I was doing some header work and I noticed when I was putting the headers in that the "control arms" were there going to the tranny. I wiggled them and could see the column shifter move a little. So I thought.. hey, if I tighten this up in the right spot, the shifter wont need to be pushed up to start the truck any more. Cause I am smart like that.

Problem is, I don't know if this is correct, and if it is, I don't know where to tighten things up at.

Anyone know? Any advise would be helpful. I am a complete DIYer as I have about 4 extra dollars a payday for the truck. So I can't take it to a tranny shop, I can't afford that.

Okay, thanks.. now I get to sound like a complete idiot...

This "nss" you speak of... is it in the cab, at the end of the column in the engine compartment or down where it attaches to the tranny? :hmm:

I wish I had read this post a while ago, but after finding out that the neutral safety switch costs $113 or so, I said to myself, "Self, let's figger this out." It turns out that the Neutral Safety Switch has ovoid mounting holes, and you physically set it to operate (start the engine) when the gear selector is in "Park". It will then also start the engine in the "Neutral" position. Time and vibration will allow the Neutral Safety Switch to creep over time. Somehow, this is a lot like life and the fit of my 501's, but it also is a praise of the simplicity of these vehicles. I think every car I have owned suffered this malady, except my Mercedes.
