Is it possible to convert a "married" type 205 to an "un-married" type? Would it be better to install the married setup?

Different case. Mounting points are different, the married usese the adapter to hold it.

Also the bolt pattern on the tail housing of the NP 435 is different for trucks with a mated 205 transfer case. The bump era F250 4X4 uses a 2wd version of the NP 435. I can't remember which is which, but one has a squareish bolt pattern and the other's bolt pattern is narrower on the 2 bottom bolt hols IIRC. Therefore the mated transfer case will not bolt up to the tranny. You would have to swap out both the transmission and transfer cases to go with a mated 205.
