Explorer 8.8 ID tag help

Post by flyboy71 »

I snagged a 98 Explorer rear today and want to know how to decode the tag. I know it has 4.10 gears but thats about it.

know its a little late but found a site that has all the rear axle codes for these explorer rears mine was a d4 which is 3.73 limited slip if you have 4.10 gears you probably have a limited slip. what did you do for spring perches? did you buy atermarket or just move the stock ones out.

I pulled the cover off and found it was an open diff with 4.10 gears. I actually cut and moved the perches on mine. You only need to move them to the outside by about 1/2 inch to center them where they belong. The rear is in the truck now but thats as far as I got. Im taking the winter to talk myself into a 4-link and maybe go back to the 9 inch, with 5x4.5 axles and rear discs. Depends how good Santa is to me this year. :D

i have a 9" out of a 82 f-100 with the 5x5.4 axles but drum brakes. but i'm pretty sure they are too wide. So the explorer perches were not too wide for the f-100 2.25 springs?

How wide is the 9", depending on how much you want to spend on wheels it may make better sense. The explorer rear is narrow which will need custom wheels with little backspacing. I'm running about 4" of backspacing on mine.

I dont have any good pics of it installed except this one but if you are careful with the grinder you can remove the perches. If you need replacements Currie Enterprises has them for this axle size along with other Explorer axle parts.

No I dont like the look of the modern big back spaced wheels. want more of the look you have on your truck more of a deep dish. Figure I'll go with wheels from coys wheel http://www.coyswheel.com/coys.html if the back spacing they list won't work pretty sure they told me they can do almost any backspace as they make their own wheels.
