Newbie to the bumps

Post by Loyro »

I have had several dent sides over the years but I am the proud new owner of a 68 F350 with a 300 I6 stake side. The truck has been sitting dead in a field for 8+ years. I have resurrected the 300 by rebuilding the carb and moving the distributer 180 degrees (someone must have been struggling to diagnose a problem) but I now find that the transmission does nothing in any gear. This truck has me excited to bring it back to life but not sure about the tranny. Think it is a cruise o matic (PFB D3). looks like it will probably need a rebuild. Is it worth it or should I look for a different tranny. What wil fit behind a 300?

Welcome from Sacramento, Ca. I have a similar story with a 68 f250. the automatic transmission in my truck wouldnt do anything when I first got the engine to run. (it also sat in a field for 10+ years) I discovered that the front seal of the tranny had failed and there was no ATF left. Five quarts of ATF later and it was shifting well enough to drive it out of the field and make it the 30 miles to home.
If the definition of crazy is "doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result " It would certainly explain why I keep buying these old Fords

I did check the fluid and it is full and has good color. I also checked the linkage and it is all connected. Running through all the gears, there is nothing not even any sound from the pump. I would think it would whine or something.

Did you check to make sure the trans is bolted to the flex plate? Or they could have had a trans problem and changed the fluid?? Just a few thoughts sounds like a fun project

welcome, you probably can get more responses on the transmission section. More people looking there. Any way good luck and enjoy your bump. :wel:
