5 spd?

Post by idaford »

I have been kicking around the idea of putting a 5 spd in my 69 swb. I currently have a 300-6 with the t18 and 3.50 rear. I am building the truck as a hot rod and plan on driving it to shows in other towns. I want to be able to get good gas milage on the highway and get up and go in town. I have a lead foot if you know what I mean  . The 300-6 will have a mild build.
I have been looking at the t5 but I know that ford put a 5 spd behind the 300 in the 90's trucks and I was wondering what trans that was and if it is any good? I am open to any trans options so let me know what you think.
Thanks
Todd

The 5 speed your thinking of is the M5R2. (Mazda 5 speed, overdrive, medium duty). Tons of info on here about doing a M5R2 swap. Lots of guys have done it & everyone seems to be happy with the swap.

If you're looking into a T5 then I would go that route. It would be much more suited for a performance application vs. the M5R2.

The M5R2 shifts good and is twice the tranny compared to a T-5.

I have found a 1991 TBird super coupe with a v6 and 5 spd. From what I have read it has a higher torque rating. Any thoughts on that one? Or shoud I find one from a pickup?

it's a tbird M5R2. They have a steeper OD ratio and different shifter than the pickup ones. It will work though.
