rear piece of driveshaft sits slightly to the right
just got done putting my newly shortened driveshaft in my 72 f100 and it a two piece i noticed that the rear part after the carrier bearing is angled more toward the right than centered but i also noticed that the yoke on the rear end sits a little to the right and isnt centered so i was wondering if this was normal just checking i didnt want to break anything after all the time i spent on this. also i changed over to a c6 auto from the 3spd manual and i noticed that where the cross member sits on the frame there is two sets of holes im assuming for the manual and auto tranny since they are different lengths but should the crossmember sit right over the bolt hole when you put the tranny in? i had to push the crossmember forward for the crossmember bolt hole to line up with the second set of holes in the frame.

Re: rear piece of driveshaft sits slightly to the right
the whole engine ans transmission sits over to the right so that it lines up with the rear end which does sit over to the right also. so it should be a straight shot right back toward the rear end from the transmission even though everything is off set. one thing i can think of is if you put the tranmission crossmember in backwards. that would let everything line up to the left. and may let the driveshaft look like it is going towards the right.

Re: rear piece of driveshaft sits slightly to the right
i never took the crossmember all the way out though i just moved it. how bout if i just take the bolts out and see if everything lines up when the crossmember slides back that like 1/2 inch or so? and then make new holes in the frame if the whole thing lines up?

Re: rear piece of driveshaft sits slightly to the right
which one of these crossmembers do you have? they are different when locating the automatic and the manual transmission. the two on the left are for c6 automatic transmissions. the one on the right is from a manual transmission. the bolt holes for the transmission mount are in a different place on both of the two different crossmembers. they are close but not quite in the same place.

You definitely need the automatic transmission crossmember to do the swap correctly.
I have one if you can't find one elsewhere.

Why is it that there's seldom time to fix it right the first time, but there's always time to fix it right the second time???

Re: rear piece of driveshaft sits slightly to the right
fordman i did a c-6 swap from amanual three speed to a c-6 on a 65 and did not notice the differance i used the original cross member and i think i just had to slide it back some and drill new holes in frame dont remember it being over but those crossmembers look the same as mine! do you think same as your trucks?

If you use the correct crossmember, there's no drilling required.
Remember, when you drill another hole in the frame, you've weakened it more in that spot.

Re: rear piece of driveshaft sits slightly to the right
thought about this last night after i posted this. i was wrong i used the doner truck trans crossmember i was the same width as original but the both ends were stamped differant orig had two bolts on ea side outer edge/ doner had one bolt each side in the middel. these trucks never had a c-6 so none avail. had to move it back al ittel but fit very nice.new one piece alum 4" 1350 jointed shaft is striaght .as far as drilling a differant hole in the frame i dont know if bump frames are same thickness, size, ect .. but 65 frames are not the strongest but most all frames in general have many holes drilled for all combinations of motors / trans / 2 wheel 4 wheel ect... never have i seen a frame damaged in that area 22 year collision tech. i think as long as the bolts are in and tight all should be well

Re: rear piece of driveshaft sits slightly to the right
well i got under the truck and unbolted the manual crossmember and slid it back but still no dice. the tranny and the carrier bearing line up good but its after the carrier that the shaft looks like it going to far to the right. i saw where fordman was talking about the whole thing going at an angle to the right because the carrier bearing mount is more toward the right of the frame. the tranny seems to be right in the middle of the tunnel does that matter maybe i put the engine mount supports in wrong? but everything in the engine bay seems to be fine.

The tunnel is offset to the right, just like the engine and transmission.
Here's a picture from underneath my truck, and I think it shows the offset quite well:
