Shifting Linkage for a Torino Transmission

Post by blackford72 »

I have a 1972 F-100 I am restoring and I have put in a 351 Windsor with a 3 speed automatic out of a 73-74 Torino and my truck is a column shift and so was the Torino. My dad and I are having trouble with the linkages for this, the steering column linkage goes up and down and the linkage on the transmission goes back and forth. I was wondering if anybody has any tips or any ideas hot to hook up the shifter?

you may need a bell crank swivel linkage from a 73-79 truck to make it work.

Which transmission are you using, C4 or C6?

Why is it that there's seldom time to fix it right the first time, but there's always time to fix it right the second time???

All I know is that my transmission is a 3 speed automatic and its out of a 73-73 Torino and originally I had in a C6 with a 360.

So a bell crank swivel linkage may work with my transmission? My dad and I have tried so many things and still don't work. I don't want a floor shift because it will hurt my back shifting it. All I know is that my transmission is a FMX 1973 3 speed automatic and it had a column shift in the Torino.

The stock truck shifter linkage from the column to the transmission is basically just a solid rod. If that won't work, you'll have to change the linkage on the side of the transmission to one from a truck. Can you post a pic of what you're working with, so we have the visual?

The 72 Torino was the first to use a cable on the shift linkage which just may save your backside here. If you can find one to steal the cable off of you may be able to simply make an upper cable mount and attach the upper cable end to your column shift. They quadrants should line up as Ford was very good about using standard ratios. If this will not work you will need to find somebody with an FMX or COM from a truck and replace the shift arm (which is not hard but definitely messy and not fun). Hawkrod
