For the last little while I have trying to figure out what type of engine, transmission and rear axle to put in my truck. I am know thinking it may be a whole lot easier to just find a vehicle that has everything already. I found a few options:

1996 Ford Explorer: 210 hp (157 kW) 5.0 L Windsor V8 engine and heavy-duty 4-speed 4R70W transmission (not sure if the rear end will fit or how much work is involved in swapping mine for this one)
!998 Ford Explorer: SOHC 205 hp (153 kW) V8 engine, same tranny and rear axle

4.6L 4Valve Engines:
1993-1998 Lincoln Mark VIII: 4.6 L DOHC 32-valve V8 280 hp, 4R70W 4-speed automatic transmission with overdrive. The Mark VIII's rear axle ratio was 3.07:1.
1995-1997 Lincoln Continental: 4.6 L Modular V8, 260 hp 4-speed AX4N automatic (not sure about rear end)

4.6L 2Valve Engines:
1996-1999 Ford Taurus SHO: 3.4 L SHO V8 235 hp (175 kW) and 230 lb·ft (312 N·m) of torque. AX4N transmission (not sure about rear end)

1991-1997 Lincoln Town Car: 4.6 L 2-valve SOHC V8 190-210 hp, 4 speed auto tranny (not sure about rear end)
1992-1997 Crown Victoria: 4.6 L 2-valve SOHC V8 210 hp, 4 speed auto tranny (not sure about rear end)

I REALLY DONT KNOW MUCH ABOUT GEAR SETTING AND REAR END UNITS SO I NEED SOME HELP! THIS WILL BE A DAILY HWY DRIVER, NO TOWING OR HAULING. I AM NOT SURE HOW MUCH MODIFICATION IS REQUIRED FOR THE REAR AXLE OR IF I HAVE TO FIND A RWD CAR. CAN I USE THE REAR AXLE OF AN AWD OR FWD VEHICLE?

why do you need to change the rear end?

I believe those explorers you mentioned have an 8.8" rear with a wheel bolt pattern of 5 x 4.5 (different than the 5 x 5.5 on our trucks).

Someone had mentioned to get different gears. I thought it would be good to get disc brakes also. Guess it would be easier just to keep mine

A little more information on your truck as it sits currently would be helpful. What engine, transmission and rearend and what is your current gear ratio? What are you trying to achieve? Better gas mileage? What exactly are you trying to achieve by swapping things around? I'm not trying to be sarcastic or negative. Knowing these things will help us to better answer your questions.

Sorry. Still tryimg to get used to forums. I have a 69 f250 ranger camper special. It has a 360 and a 3 speed auto. Notsure about the gears. I want something better on gas and hwy driving. I wont be towing or putting anything in the box. Just something to cruise in

The rear is a Dana 60 with a 4.1 ratio

Ah, you have an F250. Scratch what I said about your truck having a 5 x 5.5 bolt pattern.

Keep the D60 thats what i have on mine

it could be a 5 x5.5 pattern i have a d60 with a 3.54 rear gear in my F100 which came from the factory i found the id tag on the housing when i was cleaning it up last week

I'm not positive, but I would bet that the GVWR of the F250 would mandate an 8-lug setup.

start with a gear swap 4;10 is stump pulling or towing or big tires // try about 325 350 range for more mpg that will bring rpms down on highway and maybe you can keep your motor and trans!
