Hurst shifters

Post by pritch1958 »

I don't know if this is the best place to post this or what but I know your all Ford nuts out there and thats a plus. Me too and here's what I'm thinking about. I'm sticking either a 24" or a 27" length toploader behind a 429 in my '68 SWB. I believe it's a low hump cab since the C6 was such a close fit. The truck has bucket seats so the bench isn't an issue for shifter placement. I'm thinking about using a Hurst shifter on it that has had other possible applications you might be familiar with such as on a 1967-73 Mustang, 1967-69 Cougar, or 1972-73 Fairlane, Torino, and Ranchero.

I guess my question is for those of you who've owned or driven one of these other applications, how'd you like the feel and performance of this shifter? If you where gonna do something different for this application, what would it be?

Can't say I've driven a 'Stang with a Hurst shifter but I had a Nova with a 3 Speed and a Hurst Shifter, IMO the shifter was fantastic but that was after I spent a little while under the car adjusting everything right, and pulled the shifter boot to clean up the hack-job of a shifter install the P.O. did .

I have a Hurst competition plus shifter on my Mustang and it works awesome. I got tired of mashing my knuckles into the radio with the worn-out stocker. The competition plus shifter actually moves the handle over closer to the driver.

I had a 70 MACH 1 that had factory Hurst competition plus shifter in it and worked great. I was young and gave that shifter a hard life every weekend, it never let me down and always shifted smooth. I replaced the bushings on the shifting rods once and it was good as new. Ive destroyed other shifters speed shifting but that comp plus was one tuff son of a gun that took what i was giveing it. The Z-bar in the clutch linkage didnt hold up as good, i replaced it 5 times LOL.

I had one in a 67 Mustang coupe that i loved. Worked great after a rebuild (it was well used when i got the car, so was the car  ). I sure do miss that thing, it was a lot of fun.
