T19 shifter
Does anyone know of an aftermarket shifter for a T19 transmission?
I've looked, but haven't found anything.
It's just a thought as I have a T19 about to go into my bump.

Re: T19 shifter
nope, not exactly a "performance" trans, but you can modify the shape and length of yours by heating/bending or cutting.

Re: T19 shifter
If you mean just a replacement stick, they're not hard to find.
Here's where I get all of my manual transmission parts from: http://www.alltransparts.com/

Why is it that there's seldom time to fix it right the first time, but there's always time to fix it right the second time???

No, not necessarily the stick.
Just wondering if there was anything "Hurst-like" that would make it shift a little slicker and less like a truck...if that's even possible.

Re: T19 shifter
No, you're not going to find a 'performance' shifter for a granny-gear transmission. You could cut the shaft down and attach a different knob, but that's about it. But shifting with a shorter shaft will be a bit less convenient IMO.

Well, that's kind of what I figured. But it couldn't hurt to ask the experts here.FORDification wrote:No, you're not going to find a 'performance' shifter for a granny-gear transmission. BTW: if my T19 has a granny low I'll be supremely disappointed. That's what I'm trying to get away from with my T18.

Re: T19 shifter
You can see which T19 you have simply enough.
Put it in 1st gear, turn the input shaft and see how many turns it takes to make the output shaft make one complete turn.
It should take approximately 4, 5 or 6 turns.
4 turns is the close-ratio version. 5 or 6 and you're pretty much back to a granny gear transmission.

Re: T19 shifter
I just installed a 5:1 1st gear T19. With 31" tires and a 3.00 rear gear, 1st is useable for starting off, 2nd requires some moderate slipping to get going with a hot cam.70_F100 wrote:You can see which T19 you have simply enough.

The 3-4 gear shift is quite the drop though.

Re: T19 shifter
The T19 is in the Merc!
I probably should have tried to determine for sure what the 1st gear ratio is. It's supposed to be a 4:1. 1st gear isn't good for anything other than getting moving and going to 2nd. 3rd works great for left-hand turns, but it kinda bogs-down on right-hand turns. On the other hand, you've got to be going no more than 10 - 15mph to go down to 2nd; so you don't want to do that unless/until you've already slowed down that much.
But overall - it's way, way better than the T18 and its 3 useable speeds. BTW: it shifts way smoother than the T18.

Re: T19 shifter
, That's exactly why I'm planning to do the swap. The T-18 is great and all but 4 street-able gears is a plus . And in regards to the original post, I'm 99% sure you're not going to find any kind of performance shifter for a T-18, T-19, NP-435 or any other manual transmission that has a shifter cane rather than shifting linkage as there's not really any way to make a difference w/o there being shifter linkage and a stand-alone type shifter rather than a shifter cane like there are in these trannys. Anyways glad to hear you like the tranny.67MercM100 wrote:The T19 is in the Merc!

Re: T19 shifter
235 70 15's with a 3.54 rear gear. At least the VIN tag says it's a 3.54; I have no reason to suspect it's been changed.
I'd thought about trying to "figure" things up. But since I don't have a tach, I didn't bother. But I suppose a person (you? ) could come up with some probable estimates.
