We got the front half of the frame coated with POR-15 today. Good Lord it was muggy what with tropical depression Bonnie swinging just south of us. We only got about 2 minutes of rain from it, but the air was MEGA thick!

Before...
I showed up at my folks house last weekend to find the frame hanging from a tree. It was MUCH easier to paint the underside this way because I could raise the frame and not have to lay down to paint. We could raise/lower it with a chain hoist and had a safety chain around the tree.

Yes, the back half of the frame is dull looking due to the POR-15 being exposed to sunlight for around 2 years. Oh well...




Yes, that is a homemade wagon that is very strong. Dad moves tractors around with it when he has them broken in two for engine work.

Back in the day, and boy do I wish we had a camera for it; three other dudes and myself took the motor out of a Mercury Capri on a long pipe. We just picked it strait up and toted it over to the engine stand, like it was some sort of animal we killed hunting. I've done the tractor thing with the boom pole on so much stuff, I guess some things are just redneck universial. hehe.

Actually, my parts guy was an old friend of my Father's that has known me since I was born (I'm 36). He actually had a bumpside once so he knew exactly what I needed.

If I had to deal with a young'un, I might still be there!

Alrighty... lots of little things have been taking place.

We have the whole front end together finally. When I started putting the brakes back together, I decided to install new (or any) bushings where the calipers bolt to the spindle brackets. I had to order that part from NAPA, which took a few days. We had to hook the head of a carriage bolt into the hole behind what was left of the original bushings, then drive it all out from the other side with a punch. It took a little while but will work much better now with the correct parts in place. Of course, I painted up the caliper assemblies, which looked pretty until we started pulling fluid through the lines. I will say the caliper paint held up better against brake fluid than just plain rattle can paint.

Also, I replaced all the universal joints and the carrier bearing. I still have to coat the forward drive shaft with a thin coat of POR-15.

Here's where we stand...


As we were assembling everything back together, it was clear that the brake line that runs from the front metering block over to the passenger side had taken a beating at some point. Dad picked up a new steel line from the parts store so we bent it up and got it in place. We used a harbor freight double flaring tool. That one went so well and that steel line was so plentiful that I made the decision to do all the brake lines. I told myself that I wasn't going to do it, but everything was so open with all the body parts still off the truck, that the decision seemed too easy. The time to act was now.

So, all my brake lines are an olive green color. That is the coating of choice that was on the tubing at the parts store. Here's a pic from the back.


Here's another shot of the inside showing the brake lines, junction blocks, fuel line, and the new steering gear installed.



We started sucking brake fluid through the system with a Harbor Freight vacuum tool. It works pretty good. The only thing is that you get air around the bleeder screw. We were able to pull fluid through the system at least. Once the cab is back on, we'll be tthe tubing bent from the master cyclinder to the junction block, then bleed them the right way.

Man you have done a great so far please keep it up don't quit you have four more months. in the past two days I have read your entire "blog" on this truck I'm overseas right and can't wait to get home and start working on the 67' f250 that I have in a Storage unit in Tallahassee. I bought it on ebay in May from the original owner who had documents to prove it and drove out to TX when I was home on R&R the last week of July. For the time being I'm living through you in your project. Keep it up.

Just read your entire build. You have done a great job and looks like you're so close to getting it back together. I hope you have decided to keep it now and not sell it! If you do, someone is going to get really lucky.
