I have a 68 F100 Shortbumpbed. I have to go up to my garage to get the axle tag info.
I heard that some of these axles can be repaired when this happens. I've also heard I need to get a new set of axles.
Can anyone shed some light on their repairability? I'm leaning towards just replacing them. I'm having difficulty figuring out what to replace them with. I'll get those axle numbers tonight or tomorrow morning.
Thanks,
Jon

Re: Front differential slipping out of axle. Help?
I'm assuming you mean the tubes are coming out of the center section ?
While a new axle would be the best way to go ,
I have welded the tubes with good results ,but the trick is getting them lined up,
so they don't wear the tires out and make it handle funny.
keep in mind you are welding the cast iron center section to steel tubes so you need proper technique and the right rod.

Re: Front differential slipping out of axle. Help?
I have seen the axles themselves work there way out. I think because the bearings seize up and wear down the axle shaft allowing them to work out. If that is the case then a new axle would be needed I think

Re: Front differential slipping out of axle. Help?
Thanks guys. Yes, that is what I meant, the tube is slipping out. The only welding I've done is MIG, so I will be replacing the axles. Now I have another question or two:
I would like to keep the wheels that I have. They have the 5 on 5 1/2 lug pattern. I'd like to keep them because they are 14" wide, those are hard to find. I'd like to upgrade my axles so they can handle larger tires.
Does anyone know of axles that have this stud pattern on the hubs other than the originals? Or can I take my hubs off of the originals and put them on a new set of axles?
Thanks for any responses.

Re: Front differential slipping out of axle. Help?
its called a junk housing.. yes it can be welded back together and yea I've done it, but it'll never be "right". mig would be a poor choice.. nickel rod or core wire (E71 dual shield, not nr-211) would be best.
14" wheels are gonna cause probs.. later F-150's and FS broncos use the same bolt pattern, but the strength gain is minimal. you didnt specify the year of your truck but I'll asume you have drum brakes.. your hubs arent worth swapping onto anything even if it could be made to work.
the $$ solution is a Dana 60 with 5 on 5.5 hubs.. not a factory offering tho, youd have a custom setup, but strong enough to handle quite a bit of abuse. sample http://www.dynatrac.com/products_ford_7797f150faa.html, expect a $6K price tag
