The weather as of late has been a killer. Spraying primer in the rain won't work. Maybe later this week.

Since I'm still needing to do this.....what do you need to seal up underneath? I figured the undercoating would seal up all the little holes in the welds to keep moisture out ( I'm going with chassis saver). I can't recall any sealer underneath mine....course its still covered in rust, dirt, and paint :D

Thanks!

Ladies and Gents,

FINALLY, the cab is primed. All cab body work is done!!! We actually got it sprayed last Monday (6/7), but I'm just now getting around to posting pics.

The cab is now back at my house secured under my barn. The frame/engine/tranny have been delivered to my Father's so we can begin on it. It'll be good to get into something that isn't body work!!!

I covered the entire underside with POR-15, then filled the remaining cracks with the 3M seam sealer available at AutoZone.

Oh, I almost forgot. You can coat the cowl vent area beneath the 'grill' with POR-15 by taking a small paint brush, cut off the handle, then screw a long handle perpendicular to the brush. It worked very well. Hopefully the coating will stay. I got the surface as clean as I could.

Re: Project "Uncle Fester"- 6/23 Engine is OUT !!!

Post by 72stepside »

Just a quickie updater here...

We got into the engine a little bit today. Got all the accessories off. Broke every upper exhaust manifold off during removal. Got the intake off using the chain hoist! Got the heads off... to find there is no ridge!!! Gonna look a little closer in the coming days, but as of now, I'm not gonna have it bored (it may have already been).

Re: Project "Uncle Fester"- 6/26 Itty bitty update.

Day two of engine destruction...

Not really anything good for pics.

Well, found that someone put standard pistons in a .030 over block and I have two rods stamped '4'. Guess the budget on the rebuild was pretty low, but it didn't knock.

Also found one of the exhaust manifold bolt holes in the head is 'wallered out' (yeah, that's a southern term). It is gonna take some welding repair at the machine shop.

Other than those two issues, not too bad.

So, at the least...

New pistons, bore to .040 over, grind crank, insert cam bearings and freeze plugs, new bearings all around, valve job, and hardened valve seats. Obviously a new oil pump, lifters, cam, and gaskets.

Stay tuned...

Re: Project "Uncle Fester"- 6/28 Engine tear down Day 2

Post by 72stepside »

Again, no pics, but things have been progressing...

The engine is at the machine shop since last Thursday (7/8/10). Should get it back late this week / early next.

Tonight, we took the front suspension out so I could get it all cleaned up and replace all that I can before it goes back in (pivot bushings, radius arm bushings). Those axles are heavy with all the brake hardware still attached. I have to buy brake hardware sets because I put them back together before with no bushings where the bolt pins go that hold them to the spindle. The previous owner didn't either! I didn't know there were more parts until I read a post on this site a while back. They'll get put in this time.

I found something interesting... there were spacers between the top of the spring and the underside of the upper spring seat. One each on both sides. Anybody else ever run into these? They sit in the groove in the upper spring seat, but were molded for the spring to sit against. Do all these trucks have them and I've just never had one fall out before????

So, upcoming with be cleaning, cleaning, and more cleaning in preparation to POR-15 the front half of the frame and all the suspension parts. By that time, the engine should be back for re-assembly. After that, we dive into a C-6 rebuild. This will be uncharted territory, so we're going in armed with Factory service manuals and a Haynes Ford Auto Tranny Overhaul Manual. Throw in a prayer or two for us!

Re: Project "Uncle Fester"- 7/12 Engine at shop - suspension out

Post by 72stepside »

Wow, another update without pics? What's the world coming to? Maybe some pics tomorrow...

Got the engine back from the shop today. They measured the cylinders out and found they were in fact std sized, just the ridge (where we could measure) had been 'over excavated' to .030 over. So, now my 390 is bored to .040 over. No problem!

This block is so clean. I want to just clear coat it!!!! Everything looks in good order. All the work done plus an engine kit for $1500 so I'm pretty happy with the price. Now we just gotta get it back together. I'm going with POR Engine Paint with the engine being Ford Corporate Blue, with water pump and rocker covers being painted aluminum (tranny will be aluminum too).

But, before ANY engine work happens, we gotta get the front half of the frame coated in POR-15 so I can get the front end back together so that we'll have a place to put the engine when finished.

Long way to go, but making progress nonetheless...

Stay tuned...
