Driveshaft HELP!!!!!!

Post by cajuncannon03 »

I am restoring a 68 f100 w/360. Original had 3 speed on column, 20 years ago my dad change to c6, but kept the 3 speed parts. As part of my restoration I am going back to 3 speed. Everything has been installed, but can't get the driveshaft to fit. I know I have 3 speed driveshaft w/transmission yoke correct and u-joints all fit except for rear yoke. Yoke is wider than u-joint, could rear end yoke be different on auto vs. standard? Could it be longer, from rear end to shaft and wider and u-joint assembly on auto application?

Thanks

You just need a different u-joint. Some are square (same width, cap-to-cap on both) some are wider on one side.

Could the length of yoke on rear end be different, because the width of u-joint will solve one problem but not the length.

Maybe the diff and/or the yoke has been changed.

there are different length driveshafts per transmission. http://www.fordification.com/partnos/driveshafts_01.htm

if you dont have the right lenght you can get one from a junkyard. have one made or ask in the parts wanted section for the correct length shaft. yes i do have an original from a 6cyl 3spd lwb truck.

I am positive the driveshaft and trans. yoke is correct with the 3 speed as all parts were stored when c6 was installed. I did frame off restoration, if not length of yoke on rear end could I have put rear leaf springs on backwards or front engine mounts backwards. Truck was taken apart 1 year ago, finally got body and frame from paint shop and starting to put together. I only need 1/2" or so to get u-joint to fit in rear yoke. I know leaf springs are shorted on one end, not sure if short end is forward or towards back of truck.

:yt:

Sounds like you need a 1310/1330 combo joint.

One side will be a little over 3", and the other side about 3.5 inches.

Very common on these trucks.
