inline six c4 possible swap?

Post by BlueBleedingGreaseMonkey »

This weekend I'm hoppin my motor up, but the 3 on the tree shifter is getting old. My main question is, will I loose any power going to a c4? I have a c4 and the driveshaft too fit, & I can get a good deal on a torque converter and flywheel.. I'm just wanting some input.. I've never really seen an inline six with a c4. I should be pushing close to 300 ft lbs. Will it hold up too this with a pretty good shift kit / rebuild?
Thanks,
greasemonkey

The 300 I have in my truck came out of an 1986 van originally, and has a C6 auto from that van. As you can see from the video in my signature, the engine is not exactly stock with over 400 ft lbs of torque. The straight 6's in the 60s and 70s to my knowledge came with c4's, so I think it should be ok. I am actually in the process of converting to an AOD transmission so I have 4th gear overdrive.

Yeah, I had that thought talking to my transmission man about it today. What year model can you use a flex plate / torque converter off of?

Yup, I'm pretty much a newbie to these sixes, been around v8s my whole life. Guess I'm really a newbie to Ford transmissions, too lol. I did some reading last night. I'm going to get the a+ servo, a one piece input shaft, kevlar bands, a gasket kit, a valve body calibration kit (shift kit), and a tv cable from lokar.

300 I-6/C4 works fine. If you want a work-horse I'd find a small-block C6 though; C4 is great for daily-driving/mildly built weekend warriors, but I think the C4's can be a lil' temperamental when used for heavy work... I just swapped a 4.9/C4 into my 79' Super-cab... but I'm still keeping my eyes open for a good deal on a local C6.

Yes, you will. The closest automatic to rival a manual tranny that I know of is the GM Powerglide. However, I think a properly built C4 would hold up fine. Key word properly.

Other than the Powerglide the C4 robs the least hp of most other automatics. The C6 robs the most hp out of almost any other automatic. I have a C6 as I said above, which is why I am upgrading to an AOD. C6 is Strong as hell, but wastes too much power in my opinion, and lacks an overdrive.

A c4 can be built to handle 500 HP pretty easily if done right and like said robs the least amount of power of the Ford Automatics.
An AOD is not a great choice either in my mind because the carbed engines loose what efficiency they have by being lugged by the over drive. This is only what I found out by putting one behind a 351w in a 71 F100. I tried all kinds of gears up to a 3.73 and all kinds of tuning I could never got over 13 mpg. I should have gone up to a 4.11 but did not have access to one. That might have helped though. I just didn't want to go that route because I tow once in a while and a 4.11 would be too high on the highway when I towed in 3rd.
I just said the heck with it and went the big block route with a c/6 and 3.25 gears and can knock down 15 mpg. if I drive real easy. Figured gonna get big block gas mileage might as well have a big block lol
