It's a safe bet to assume the worst. Old beater 4x4's seam to get the brunt of neglect and abuse over thier lives once they reach beater status. The maintenance isn't hard nor expensive, but when nothing's been taken care of for 20 years things don't hold up very well to hard use.

Ryan,

If the front axle is original, forget maintenance and find a later open knuckle D44 from a dent F250.

You will be miles ahead. AND get disk brakes.

Good luck on whatever you decide.

And......... You have equal traction to all 4 wheels on a hard smooth surface....Open diff doesn't matter so much when you have equal traction to all 4. It will jump that much worse with LS or lockers doing the same thing..

Lesson: don't use 4wd (hi or lo) on hard packed dry surfaces. I.E- Concrete or asphalt. most anything else will allow enough slip.
