np205 shift boot in 72?
Putting a np205 in my 72 F350 and wondering if the ones in the 78 F250 came with a shift boot retainer ring or? I also notice the shift boot on the 67-72 is different from the 73-79. Will the 67-72 round boot work with the NP205 or does it have to be the 73-79 longer one?

Re: np205 shift boot in 72?
the only two differences i have ound in the two different boots is stroke length of the boot and the 73-79 boot is bedn to fit over the side of the tunnel cover.

so will the 67-72 work with the NP205 or need the 73-79 with the longer stroke to work?

i dont know. what you could do is wait until the last possible mintue to get the right boot until you have tried shiting the shifter.

If the shifter lever clears the transmission cover then the original boot should work.

Re: np205 shift boot in 72?
I dont have the hole in mine as it was 2wd so want to cut once and I think the smaller the boot the better (less space taken) also thinking I will then cut it for the 67-72 boot and go with that. Anyone have a pic of a trans tunnel cover with the 67-72 hole cut in it for transfer case shifter? My NP205 will be married so Im thinking that will be a different location than stock?

Re: np205 shift boot in 72?
i thought i saw one on ebay the other night. but i cant find it now. i only found 2 and neither one was for a 4wd. ok here is one from a 73-79 . if you notice the hole is larger for the shifter throw and the boot size. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1973-197 ... ccessories

yea dont like how the boot wraps around the side, rather have it just on the top.
Thanx for the pic

Re: np205 shift boot in 72?
Just swapped a NP205 in place of a Dana 21 in our F100. It originally used the round boot for the D21. I don't think the round boot will work for the NP205 though. The D21 is just a 1 speed case (2wd or 4wd), the NP205 has A LOT more throw than that (4L-N-2H-4H). I don't think the round hole will give you enough clearance for the throw of the shifter. I should be hooking up the t-case linkage tomorrow though, so I should know for sure then.

Re: np205 shift boot in 72?
The throw of the shifter is entirely relative to the stick itself. You can lengthen the distance between the stick's pivot and the linkage to get a shorter throw whenever needed.
The D24 shifted terrible compared to the NP205 so you don't need as much leverage.

Re: np205 shift boot in 72?
Sorry it took a few days, been ironing out some other issues and the shift linkage for the NP205 wasn't a high priority.
The NP205 shifter, at least in stock configuration, will NOT clear the earlier transmission floor cover for the Dana 21. It doesn't hit by a lot though, just at the very ends of the throw for 4L and 4H. It'd be enough to interfere with getting into those gears though. But if you have your heart set on using the round shift boot you probably still can. You'd have to open up the hole for the shifter in the floor cover nearly all the way out to the mounting screws for the round shift boot though. It'd be close. Either that or do as average250 mentioned and lengthen the NP205 shifter between the pivot and linkage to shorten the throw a little.
I'm just going to run the later floor cover and boot.

I currently dont have the hole for either so sound like the deal will be run the newer NP205 boot and cut for that.
