Looks good. The hose that tore off is a breather hose for the rear end,so if you go thru deep water the water doesnt get in the rear end itself.

The old shocks:

While changing the shocks I accidentally tore off a dry-rotted hose that was running from a connection point that my brake lines shared:

It was just a empty hose running up through the frame rails towards the back of the truck. Wasn't connected to anything. What is it for?

I also rebuilt the carb today. Now the damn thing won't start again. it looks pretty rough, so I may see if I can score a better one at the Charlotte Auto Fair next weekend.

Next on the agenda is the transmission. I think it bled out a couple quarts while I was in Haiti. I'll probably drop it out and take it to a shop though.

is it something best plugged shut or is it better to find a replacement hose?

Ya don't want to plug it... Pressure builds as the rear end parts heat up from use and expands. If it's plugged the only way to relieve the pressure is leaking oil thru the seals.

I removed the vent from the axle housing and cleaned it out with a drill bit, it was packed with dirt and grime (it just screws in.) Then replaced the hose with a section of fuel line and a clamp, ran it up to the top of the frame.

Yanked off the timing chain today. A few pics and notes:

- the water pump is rusty and filthy. What you see is what it was like when I yanked it off. the motor has been running pretty damn hot, so I plan to replace the water pump and thermostat, and while I'm at it the fuel pump.

- the timing chain was pretty loose, as you can see. The chain fell off the gears before I even got them off.

- there's some burnt-smelling sludge on the side of the motor. I'm thinking it may be a good idea to drop the oil pan and clean it out along with the oil pump screen (may be a cause of my low oil pressure?)

Hooker headers with glasspacks and 2 1/2" pipes. The sound isn't as deep as some trucks...a more old school throaty sound.
