Can I swap a Dana 21 for a NP205?

Post by F10YRB12118 »

Forum,

Perhaps this has been addressed elsewhere, I apologize in advance if I missed the thread during my search. I want to swap out my leaky old Dana 21 with an unknown NP 205. I own a 1972 F100 4x4 with a Dana 21 hitched to a NP435 behind a 360. I just acquired a running no rust 1973 F250 4x4 with a NP 205 behind a 3 speed auto with a 360 for $200.00

I have gone over many agonizing hours debating whether to keep the 72 F100 or keep the 73 F250. All in all, I think I'll keep my F100. I like Bumps more than Dents.

Does anyone know if I can drop the Dana 21 and bolt up the NP 205 from the 73? What challenges or issues might I have? Has anyone done this before?

Thank you,
Sean

It can be done but it's not going to be a bolt in. sorry, but I dont have any specific info on the swap, but the trans (or at least the adapter and maybe shaft) is different. plan on crossmember and floor mods. and probly rework the drivelines. a Dana 20 from a early Bronco is also possible with adapters from Advance.

My '70 F-100 has a 205 behind a 435 out of a '78 Bronco, but I didnt do the swap. I can tell where things have been modified.

Eric

Edit: the '73 is gonna be a divorced case which makes it a poor candidate

The 205 from the 250 is DIVORCED. Your D21 is mated. No, there's no chance in hell of them interchanging.

Eric L & Averagef250,

Thank you for the advice. I was afraid that might be the case, just the divorced vs. married issue was going to be hard to overcome. Eric L can you tell more about how your swap was done?

Thank you for your comments. It sure shows the advantage of forum.

Yours,
Sean

I dont have much in pics at the moment.. but it would seem someone used a trans and transfer from a F-150 or FSB, bolted them to the bellhousing, made a goofy mount at the trans x-member, chopped a larger hole in the tunnel cover to accommodate the differences in the shifter/pattern. clutch & linkage should remain the same, driveline lengths may change, exhaust clearances may get tighter depending on what's in there now. note the yokes on a "new" transfer case may not match or interchange with what you have now. Ford used a few different yokes depending on the application.

Hello F10YRB12118,

If you decide to get rid of that Dana 21 let me know. I know they are a week transfer case but a weak transfer case is better than no transfer case at all.

Hey there, are you looking for a dana 21 case because I got one in my 71 f100, I will be changing it over to a 205 set up.
I don't know what shipping would cost.

F10YRB12118-

Yes, you can put a NP205 in your '72 F100, but it will have to be the married type and you'll need the transmission too. Here's a link to a "how to" on installing a NP205 in a '71 F100 http://www.fordification.com/forum/view ... =9&t=50999

Fordman-

If I remember right its 1 1/8", and most crescents only go to 1".
