Just my opinion here, but might want to read some of Robroy's stuff about his "engine builder". You may want to cut your losses and go somewhere else.bb429power wrote:He has a polisher but not a grinder.averagef250 wrote:Your engine builder doesn't have a crank grinder? He just takes them to some guy he knows so he doesn't have to have the machine. I think part of it is because he doesn't have the room for it. He's got a TON of CNC stuff, just no grinder. Still a polisher. The thing I like about him is that he really does know what he's doing. He does stuff that a lot of other shops don't do. We swapped labor to lower the cost on our last build with him. Right now without swapping labor, he's giving us one heck of a deal. He let me come into his shop and he showed me how to do a bunch of stuff like line honing, lapping, cc a chamber, configuring c/r, pressing out a wrist pin, grinding the rods down, ect. with more to come. He really does know his stuff, the crank grinder he sends his stuff to is his buddies, so they help each other out in a way. He builds them himself and I was right there when he line honed it, he got the clearances pretty dang close. He's anal when it comes to engine work, you can tell and I'm the same way. I read what happened to Robroy, its a shame.averagef250 wrote:Just my opinion here, but might want to read some of Robroy's stuff about his "engine builder". The builder I use has nothing CNC. Not that it's a bad thing, I'd prefer my engine parts be machined manually. He has a crank grinder and the reason is because he BUILDS the engines. HE grinds the clearances exactly how he wants them. Cranks aren't just ground, I mean you do not grind an OE spec engine crank the same as you would one spinning 7800 for a 2 hour race. Mass crank grinders don't do this. They split the OE clearance for the journals and consider it fine. When you grind the crank you know that crank, something's not right with it you know first hand.
An engine builder has a crank grinder. That's all I have to say about that.
Ive been useing cat caterpiller paint for over 30 years and can say that it going to last atleast 30 years inside of doors, cowl,or anywhere else thats protected like those. If it can last on a piece of heavy equipment that outside year round and never gets cleaned untill it breaks down or starts to look bad from mold and grime, and is always being scratched by trees, limbs,or anything else that the equipment runs in to. I paint my stuff to last as long as possable and have never had any problems with rust coming up with metal thats been clean, I have used oil also on parts cars and trucks to keep from rusting and it works good, the problem with useing oil on something that being fixed up nice is its going to be full of dirt and bugs that get stuck in it , plus where ever the excess oil runs off is going to be the same way. the best way to keep something from rusting is to protect it and keep it dry, most of the time trucks rust out because something clogs the drain and it fills dirt and water and stays wet and rust them out. I do agree that anyone who thinks undercoat and spraying tons of paint and spraying motor oil on a vehicle fixes it forever is very naive.averagef250 wrote:Rust, oxidation is a fact of life. I don't care how nice your truck is or where you live. If it ever gets wet and you don't take the door panels off, spray a little motor oil down there and unplug the drain holes or the truck will rust. Same goes with the other body seams.
This isn't something you do to your beater, it's what you do to any truck if you want it to last forever. In time undercoat dries up and falls off. Plus it makes a mess of everything and no undercoat job is perfect.
You know what I love? Seeing all those decent old trucks that guy's got the beds, undersides and floorpans Linexed about 10 years ago when the stuff was super "cool" thinking it would make the truck last longer and be more valuable. Now, the beds are rusting away underneath the bedliner since you can't see it until you feel the floor flexing, the bedliner is cracking and falling off. Looks p*ss poor and it's almost impossible to strip that junk off.
