Soon to be, spring break! I will work on the truck during the break. I feel like I'm talking to myself, I haven't been getting any feedback from anyone.

Sorry, watching your build with intrest, but I'm not usually one to reply on someone's build unless I have some advice or feel that the person wouldn't be offended by someone he or she doesn't really know anything about. Long explanation, but thought I'd share it as I know several others are the same way. I guess I'm a little backward that way
I'm about as qualified on 385 info as a 3 legged horse is for barrel racing, but I'm enjoying the build!
Have a good'n,
Frank

Re: 67 f100, 600+ft-lbs, bb429power build
What tools and technique are you using on those heads?
I ask as a matter of constructive criticism. I'm not an expert at portwork, I've done more than I wanted to, but without any real scientific backing, just my own common sense and a few good books applied.
First, it's a good idea to blue the port faces and scribe a guide line so you have some sort of reference on where your port is supposed to end up. A new gasket is a good guide to trace. It isn't ideal to port match exhaust ports though, the head side port should always be slightly smaller than the header flange on non turbocharged non-race engines.
Your grinding/sanding looks a little splotchy/scattered/unplanned. I don't know how far along you are, but you might try focussing more effort on smaller areas at a time instead of spreading your effort out thinly over the whole head. The bowls really take the work, the port walls are almost fun. You should put some more work into those guide bosses. They just need to support the guide, not be a blob out in the port.
Uniform shape/port area is more important than the surface finish of the ports. It's also much harder to gauge than how shiny it is.
What are you using for tools? Air or electric, what rpm, what kind of bits?
I have big strong hands and little wrists . I've had carpel tunnel issues since I was a teenager and lose feeling in my hands after using air tools for very long. I've also found air die grinders and any short die grinder just don't cut it for controllability. I bought a decent Makita medium sized electric die grinder 15 years ago to help and it works much better than air, much quieter, easier to control.
Hope you don't take this negatively. You're work is good, I hope you put the time in to get those heads where you want them.

Thanks guys. I didn't realize that people WERE keeping up with my build. Seeing all the comments so soon, OI can tell everyone was. That's all I wanted to know is that people were looking at it and not just ignoring it. I will post my porting techniques soon but those pictures were just before I finalized them.
Thanks for the support, I'm watching your builds as well.

Check out 460ford.com There is a bunch of guys that can help you with the port work. One is Scott..(reinCARnation?) also known as "The Mad Porter" he has a complete website devoted to the porting/polishing of the 385 series heads. Good Luck and keep up the good work. I too have been watching.

I'm a member of 429-460.com which is the new forum for 460.com. 460.com was made buy a guy who didn't even own a 429/460 and it was all about the money with him, so the new one is much better. Your right on the reinCARnation thing. Thanks.LANCE65 wrote:Check out 460ford.com There is a bunch of guys that can help you with the port work. Re: 67 f100, 600+ft-lbs, bb429power build
I don't have pics of the tools yet. But I used a deburr kit to knock it down then used tootsie rolls to smooth it out. I went in a "U" shape back and forth then made the movement bigger and did the same to all of the sides in the port. I then went in a circle round and round to conform it all together. Difficult to understand?

Noooo the new owner is that way. The owner of 460ford sold it to someone that doesn't know anything about anything, and is in it for the money as you can see with the advertisements. The original creator shouldn't of sold itbb429power wrote:I'm a member of 429-460.com which is the new forum for 460.com. 460.com was made buy a guy who didn't even own a 429/460 and it was all about the money with him, so the new one is much better. Im not going to lie to you, this is the first time ive seen your project Looks like your making good progress on it though. I ported and polished my heads on a 390 and thought this might be helpful. When you get the ports and bowls like you want them finish up with a flapper wheel, will make all your work nice and smooth. Keep up the good work.

Yep, that's what we did. At least I think its called a flapper wheel. The exhaust ports are smooth as glass, thanks for the tip, I'll try to get a picture of it when I get a chance.
