My next question is where should the center line of the transmission be? Being that the long tail housing hs those odd ball mounts I would like to drill some holes in the crossmember for the mounts. But I want to make sure the center line of the end of the transmission is in line with the rear end.

the easy way to do it is to put the engine and transmission in and then hold the crossmember up in place and that will give you a close center. to make mounts for the trans. as well you could also hook up the driveshaft to line it up with the rear end.

So tonight I am looking at C6 transmissions on Craigslist and I find no less then three with the super long tail housing like mine. None with the shorter housing.

I bought a 429 passenger car C6 and swapped in the short tail shaft from my FE C6.

What are the pros and cons of a short-tailshaft vs a long tailshaft? Were the short tailshafts designed for use in trucks and the long tailshafts for cars?

Depends on LWB vs SWB. LWB has a slip joint in the center support bearing therefore a flanged, short, tail shaft is best for this application.

SWB can use a long tail shaft with slip yoke since there is no center support bearing with slip yoke.

That's my understanding. Could be wrong as I often am...

Or use the long tail shaft with the slip yoke and do away with the center bearing and go to a one piece drive shaft.

A lot of long tail C6's came from Lincolns, which has a small servo and a soggy shift pattern.
I posted earlier on how to tell what 2nd gear servo you have in both C4 & C6's & much to my surprise, There was NO response :? ........................Donnie
