I learned something today concerning 9" ford rear axles and Dana axles. Thinking I had a 9" ford I ordered 4.11 gears When they arrived I checked the teeth count. The new gears were 9/37 and the old ones were 11/45. Never work. While doing a cross reference I find the 11/45's came in Dana carriers. And the 4.10 , 4.11 came in ford carriers. So I must have a Dana rear.
So from what I understand the 4.10 and 4.11 won't fit in place of a 4.09
Any input on this info?

9" ford and Dana are completely different animals... the 9" has a removable third member (pumpkin) and the Dana's don't have a removable third member, you have to change the gears through the back of the housing behind the cover, etc...
Each has their has specific gear ranges and some will be off from the other as you found out...

The pumpkin comes out the front, but the ratio seems to come with dana axles only. Guess thats not the case with the one i have.
So what I was wanting to know did Dana make chunks that came out the front for repairs?

No. If the center chunk is removeable, it is a 9".
4.09, 4.10, and 4.11 are pretty much the same ratio.

To follow up on the 9" rear axle in the 70 f100, the problem seemed to not go away until I really found out what I had,
Sometime in this trucks history someone replaced the rear end out of a early Lincoln. Lincoln used a 9 3/8 ring gear. That size is now a dinasore and not manufactured by anyone so to solve the problem I will be installing a new tru-lock complete 3rd member. The old posi-track carrier is on fine condition, it's a 31 spline. If anyone needs one and is interested let me know. The reason I am changing over is because the part of the pinion that goes into the rear pilot bearing has slight pitting, the teeth are all fine and all bearings good and no road noise. But the owner wants everything perfect.
