Re: 4x4 Aux gas tank
Welcome to the site. There was never a gas tank offered in a 67-72 F-250 4x4 other than the in cab tank. Anything else is aftermarket or adapted from a newer truck.
No, the 2wd aux tanks will not fit.

Re: 4x4 Aux gas tank
kind of a bad idea for a tank. but what about using a outside the frame rail tank. like the dealers put on some trucks? they had short filler necks that were inside of the bed via a access door and had no gas gauge in them either. kind of the worse of the picks. but it was useable back then.

Re: 4x4 Aux gas tank
Thanks for the input! But, It sure seems factory to me . It has a factory looking cover inside the bed that covers the fuel fill line and inside the cab it has a main and aux lever beside the seat on the floor and a switch on the dash that says main and aux? There was a tank at one time there and i would just like to put it back. I need the straps/hangers and the tank. Maybe someone has a used one i can have repaired or install if good? Does anyone have a set up like mine? I would post some pictures, but i can't figure out how. Thanks for any help, Tim

Re: 4x4 Aux gas tank
I'd venture a guess that you have a 2WD body that was swapped onto a 4WD chassis by a previous owner, which is actually a pretty common practice.. The factory auxiliary tank will not clear the transfer case, so there was never one offered.

Re: 4x4 Aux gas tank
I hate to break it to you, but we're not stupid here. Many of us on this site has severe life altering addictions to 67-72 ford 4x4's and treat them like family. There are certain truths we know to be chiseled in stone facts and one of the biggest is there was never, ever a factory option aux gas tank available on a 4x4.In FORD we trust wrote:Thanks for the input! By what you describe I will tell you what you have with 99.9% accuracy- You have a 2wd bed swapped on your 4x4. Rarely will anyone go through all the trouble to use the factory 2wd aux gas tank filler stuff to add an aux tank to a 4x4 because the 2wd aux tanks absolutely will not fit. So why is the filler there? The filler is there because the 2wd truck the bed came off had an aux tank.
Beyond this I will even go as far as to say that your truck probably has an entire 2wd body swapped onto it since the aux switch is in the cab and the tank gauge switch is under the dash.
Here's how to tell-
Crawl under your truck and look at the rear cab mounts. 4x4 cabs all mount outside the frame rails, this is because the transfer case crossmember sits right where the cab mounts would go. If your cab was from a 2wd it will still have the telltale cab mounting holes present inside the frame rails. This would be very clear from inside the cab if you pull the gas tank out. You'd see 4 cab mount holes because someone drilled them. The next big giveaway is the radiator core support- 2wd and 4x4 were different. The 4x4's mount the radiator off extra wings spot welded to the main support body, the 2wd core bolts the radiator direct to the support.

Re: 4x4 Aux gas tank
the 4wd f100 rear cab mounts are the same as a 2wd they are inside the frame. it is only the F250 4wd the cab moutns are outside the frame. but i have never seen that yet. not even in a picture. i put a 2wd cab on my F100 4wd with no mods at all. it bolted right up.

You're right Fordman, I should have wrote 250 4x4, not just 4x4, oops.

Re: 4x4 Aux gas tank
Hey Guys , Thanks a bunch for the input. I dare not call anyone stupid. I came to this site for the love of old Ford trucks and knowledge from anyone willing to share. I just finished putting the gas tank back in. I took all of the interior out and put Dynamat on everything ( that's pretty cool stuff) My truck has 4 holes under the gas tank just as you said, But they look very factory. Right in the middle of these factory indents. I can't check the radiator core support because i had that replaced. It had some rust holes under the battery area and that was the only rust on my truck so out it came and in with the new. I don't know but my truck looks original to me. But i'm no expert. is anyone willing to pm me with their e-mail so i can send pictures and maybe help me figure out just what i have? I really don't care what my truck is . I love it , Its sweet! I just wanted to put a tank back in the void and make everything work perfect. Thanks again for all your input. I will humbly accept any knowledge shared. Tim

Re: 4x4 Aux gas tank
From your pic that front marker light on the fender points to it being a Camper Special body which was never offered in a 4X4, another sign of a body swap.
Here is a picture of what the factory Aux tank looks like, as you can see it is inboard of the frame and mounts right were the transfer case mounts, so that is why they never had this as an option. You could get dealer add on tanks that mount on the outside of the frame and would have a hinged door on the side of the truck for the fuel filler or it would fill from inside the wheel well. These add on tanks also never came with sending units so no gauge for them.
The way the filler is on your truck I think you could still mount an external frame mount tank on it and maybe use that filler, or you could get one custom built that would work and mount a gauge in it as well.
Nice looking truck you have though

Re: 4x4 Aux gas tank
It does have Camper Special emblems and a stainless steel plate on both sides where something on a cab over camper mounted. Looks like i have a truck that is not as original as i was told. Now I'm wandering what year the frame is and what it came from 100/250? I have 5 leaf springs in the front and 9 at the rear. it also has disc brakes in the front. Oh and Thanks for the complement, it seems to have original paint. I live in Ohio and we don't see em without rust around here. This is a real solid and very nice driving truck.

Re: 4x4 Aux gas tank
read the vin off of the front passneger side top of the frame and post it. or look it up in the vin number spec page. the last letter and number is the seiral number. it will tell you what model year the frame was produced for. it will also give you the correct enigne size that came in that frame.

Re: 4x4 Aux gas tank
The Vin on the door will start with "F26XXXXX" if it is titled as a 4x4. It will be "F25XXXX" if it's a 2wd title. The front axle is from a 76-77.5 F-250 4x4.
Looks like you have a nice truck there even if it's not original. I wouldn't want to drive one of these trucks all original, there are lots of tasteful upgrades you can do to them that make them nicer to drive, disc brakes are a good one.
