dana front ends and divorced t cases

Post by bike5087 »

What is the advantage of the highboy divorced t-case over the later (like 1979) married f-250 t-case?

Also what is the difference between the 40 and 60 dana front ends?

The divorced transfercase makes for good U-joint angles with non-CV front drivelines at stock vehicle height. Clutch jobs are easier.

Mated transfer cases with HP front axles and CV front drivelines beat divorced transfer cases in most respects except clutch jobs. You can put a whole lot more torque through a mated setup reliably.

Dana 44 HD is rated for around 3500 pounds, has balljoints and small U-joints.

Dana 60 is rated for around 3800 pounds, has kingpins/trunnion bearings, massive U-joints, 1.5" axleshafts, etc.

Don't forget the Dana 44 HD and 44 XHD. These are closed knuckle trunion bearing axles like the 60, but not quite as heavy. My 68 has the XHD, it is basically dana 60 outers on a 44 case...basically. Kind of a pain in the butt to find parts for, but man I love it! (Oh, I thought there was only 1 of these over build 44's, a buddy of mine gave me an extra knuckle from his truck, and it was about 1/3 smaller than the knuckle on mine...that is how I found out about the HD and XHD) Not sure what the correct Ford or Dana name is for them, but that is what we started calling them to tell them apart.

When in doubt, hit the gas. It may not be the right answer, but at least it ends the suspense!!

There are no LD, HD and XHD versions of the closed knuckle 44, only LD and HD. The standard light duty version was under 90% of 68-72 F-250 4x4's. The HD ones were rated for 3500 pounds and were only under trucks with the 7700 VIN plate GVW package and crewcabs.

The 3500 pound closed knuckle 44 shares hubs and spindles with the closed knuckle 60 used under crewcabs in later years, but absolutely nothing else. 44's and 60's don't interchange many parts. they're apples and oranges.

I said that they were BASICALLY 60 outers on a 44, not that they were direct bolt. I agree that they are apples and oranges.

F100's use a dana 44. It is open knuckle. (light duty)
F250's use a dana 44. It is a closed knuckle. (heavy duty)
Mine is a Crewcab F250. It is a closed knuckle. The knuckles are bigger than the knuckles on my buddy's standard cab, about 30%.
Mine is a 68, his is a 69. Yes, it is 7700 lb on the vin plate. (mine) (plate on the diff states it is a dana 44)
Like I said, since I cannot find any factory literature on these, may as well be light duty (F100, heavy duty (most F250's), and extra heavy duty (7700 lb vin).

All I was trying to point out is that there is more than 1 dana 44 front end in bumpside Fords. There are in fact 3 different versions.

Cheers!

Try to remember guys, that the newer hubs on Dana 60's have the fuse built inside the hub, on the older hubs the bolts holding the hub on acted as the fuse. I sheared them off once with a 429 under the hood stuck in the mud...blew all the belts off that day too. Any way the Dana 60 front end from 78-79 with king pins was the best. I think they use them in 5 ton truck front-ends now.
